Do you know what's MORE depressing than the sheer number of people (90% women) who left this fill in the blank unanswered, were some of the answers. When an egg is released from the ovary it's called__________ I actually got ejaculation and sperm for this question. When people tell you 'college isn't for everyone' it's usually meant as a slight insult and boy do I want to scrawl it on a few tests....


And to top it off the post woman comes and tries to shove a poster mailer into my mail box (apparently she failed spatial relations). She nicked the poster inside AND tore the door off the mail box in the process. You just know my landlord isn't going to fix that.

Some students really answered "ejaculation"? Jeesh.

Here's one from my neck of the woods. I showed a documentary on The Pill -- the history, the changes in society, little bits therein on environmental issues, and the rise of the health care/consumerism movement, effects on the second wave of the feminist movement, yadda yadda.

In one scene, there was a discussion about the relationship between Dr. Pincus (the developer of the pill), and Margaret Sanger and Catherine McCormack (the women who encouraged and supported - financially - the development of the pill. Pincus was given to understand that the women wanted to keep a close eye on his research. One expert said that "Dr. Pincus (the developer of the pill) saw that he would have to get in bed with these two women". Now, the expert was clearly making a metaphor about the need that Pincus had to work closely with both Catherine McCormack (then 78) and Margaret Sanger (then 73).

Several of my students most sincerely thought that Pincus was in a threesome with Sanger and McCormack.

I almost - almost - asked them if they read fanfic, but stopped myself from doing so.....

And so it goes.....
