The Cosmic Fool
Apr. 2nd, 2006 11:53 pmHere's a set of 4 interconnected drabbles centering around Angel
Theme - Fools
Fool the First
She made a fool of him and not for the first time. He gave his life for just a chance at a taste of her red lips, for the possibility he’d get to know what hid under her fine skirts. He couldn’t even say his unlife was any worse than his mortal one. In many ways it was better. It was certainly more fun, until the gypsy girl. She had been given to him as a gift but the very woman who turned from him in disgust now. He couldn’t deal with the soul on his own. Darla didn’t care.
Fool the Second
The Powers that Be were laughing at him. He gave back his humanity, let them rewind the day so his love could live. He should have been smart enough to put conditions on it. He should have bargained for a long healthy life. Now he was in a monastery fighting for his sanity and his love was six feet under. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Why hadn’t he foreseen this would be the way their luck ran? He couldn’t catch a break. He never seemed to see things from all sides. He was, at heart, a fool.
Fool the Third
Angel sat in the attic with his son’s baby things, thinking. He had trusted her. Maybe that was a mistake or maybe the PTBS were jerking him around again. His trust lay on the ground, shattered like glass. It was bad enough when she left his side for Groo all those months ago. He had told himself, she was just getting it out of her system, this desire to be a princess. He could live with that desertion but not this one. Betraying him with his own son. How could she? What sort of fool did she take him for?
Final Fool
“It wasn’t supposed to be like this, watching without being able to intervene,” Angel said.
“What did you expect being dead to be like?” Darla replied, as they gazed through the rift to Earth’s plane.
“I gave up the Shanshu to save my friends...to save my son.” Angel’s eyes went wet. “Now the world is in even worse shape. It keeps coming for him.”
“Didn’t it ever occur to you that something prophesied since long before you were even born, might have cosmic significance?” Darla asked. “You tipped the balance towards evil and now Connor pays.”
“Always the fool.”
