Beauty drabbles
Apr. 9th, 2006 06:50 pmLike last week I have a progressive set of character sketches.
Holtz & Connor - S3 - Dangers of Beauty
“Beautiful, isn’t it?” Holtz pointed to the small creature with jewel-toned wings. It rode the winds, effortlessly, seeming carefree.
“Yes, Father,” Steven had never seen the creature before and wanted a closer look.
Holtz held him back. “Watch.”
Steven watched the beautiful flier land on the large, herbivorous Urnter. The flier whipped its emerald tail against the creature and it collapsed almost instantly. “Poisonous?” the boy asked.
“Yes. Beauty is deceptive, Steven. Your mother was very beautiful but ugly underneath. Beauty is all too often a lure for the unwitting. Do not be taken in by pretty colors. Understood?”
“Yes, Father.”
Connor - S 4 - False Beauty
Connor knew that in the traditional sense his daughter’s face wasn’t beautiful but beauty meant little to him. He had grown up in hell where such things didn’t matter. To him she was beautiful because she was his child. It was his job to guide her, to love her, to do the things fathers were meant to do.
In the back of his mind, he heard Holtz’s warning of the dangers of beauty, but his heart wouldn’t let him acknowledge it. If it would have, maybe he have noticed she didn’t treat him as a father, but rather as the child.
Connor & Angel - post NFA - Learning Beauty
“Is it...beautiful?” Connor stared at Dawn Summers’ painting. She was off doing what artists did at their gallery openings. Connor had come because she asked him too. Angel had come because he loved art. He understood it.
Angel beamed, sensing his son finally wanted to learn from him. “It is. See her use of light and color here.” He gestured at the painting. “This is beauty.”
“Nice,” Connor decided then moved to a nearby canvas which was nothing more than two expressive, almond-shaped, blue eyes staring out of the gloom. “This is prettier.”
“Son, I think those are your eyes.”
