graduation day

You know seriously if I have to do this every year I think I'll be investing in nicer garments that what the school got me (or at least make myself a gown that's not polyster). So there I am, like a polyster peacock, grumbling about being there since I avoided my own graduations (oddly enough so had most of the professors around me and now we have to do this as part of our job). At least it was cool outside (but i forgot my stupid sunglasses)
I learned some things today. We have a very good choir at my college. No, really. And the worst taste in music selection ever. We're not a religious school so having three of four songs of a religious nature rankled (especially the student body), and not even appropriate to the occasion religious stuff. Elijah Rock? WTF? Then they announce the speaker as Sen. John Kerry and I'm thinking no way could we afford him...so as it turns out it's John CAREY from southern OH and he knows how to speak to a crowd, short and sweet. However, the preacher doing the benediction and invocation thinks he's trying out for Pope or something and drones on and on and on and on and no one's listening and they're talking because it's ridiculous (again NOT a religious school, if it was we'd expect it).
somehow I'm supposed to feel good about all of this. Mostly I just thought about all the things I could have been doing with this time.

I'm of the opinion that often the big ceremonial stuff is as much for the students parents as it is for those who are graduating -- but that's just me (I know my parents were far more excited about this stuff than either myself or my brothers).
