I've been wanting to see this site for years. It's in my own back yard but it's only been open to the public for the last two years. The Meadowcroft rock shelter. So...COM wants to see a cave. WHy? This particular one is the center of one of the hottest debates in archeology right now. The Meadowcroft rock shelter suggests humans have been in America for 16,000 years, about 4 thousand years longer than the proposed Beiring Strait crossing theory (which given the age of some of the sites now turning up in South America is really starting to look just wrong). This is the only site of its kind in North America, predating the Clovis sites by thousands of years.

So my parents and I go. First off we get to see Meadowcroft village with is an 1700-1800 hundreds recreation village. I think I was last there when i was ten. Well much of it was closed down because in their attempts to bring it all up to world heritage status (much more so for the rockshelter than a higgedly-piggedly put together vilalge) they have to make sure EVERYTHING is 100% historically accurate for the buildings they have it in which it wasn't.

STill, we got to see some neat old stuff, including the really cute blacksmith and some neat wagons including two hearses, one of which was a sleigh (pictures coming later), and a few made out of wicker. The brothers donating this site Arthur and Delvin Miller were famous for other things, Delvin was a world class award winning harness racer...jockey? driver? what the heck do they call them? There was also a doggie (or goat) treadmill. You got your dog to run on the treadmill and it either churned butter or washed clothes depending on what it wsa hooked up to.

The rock shelter was cool, small, much smaller than I thought for something under excavation since 1971. The guide mentioned that because we were a big group they'd allow us inside for a peek but otherwise you ahd to look at it on the monitor. That rather irritated me. I paid money for this. If I wanted to look at it on a screen I'd watch the History channel. I'm wondering if it's an insurance thing since even the walkway is NOWHERE near where someone could reach out and screw up the dig.

The guide also mentioned that when the dig started the archeologists first had to clear the cave of beer cans from the local youths. My mom leans over and said dad and his buddies were the ones who used to hang out in the cave drinking in the 50's & 60's. Lovely.

In non-archeological news, i get a call from a collection agency and the first thing they say is is D home and I'm like speaking. Do you live at Box 927? Huh? Not for years WHO is this. It's a collection agency for an MRI from FIVE years ago. A bill workman's comp has already paid and I know this since it was a nightmare to get it paid in the first place. I told them to contact my lawyer since I wasn't allowed to talk about charges regarding this case. 'can we have your new address for our records.' No. Click. Bite me.

Interesting post. That thing about your dad and his buddies sounds like one of the embarassing things I'd find out about my own dad. (did I ever mention the time I found out, on a parents' day, that he used to date one of my teachers? Gah)

Um, doesn't the fact that the meme says I'm supposed to leave an anonymous comment kinda defeat the purpose of it being anonymous? Besides which, you have anonymous posting turned off.

*scratches head*

Anywho...glad you had fun at the cave!

A haiku? *scratches head* Methinks Silvrethorn would be so much better at that.

*mumbles* Lymerics. I can write those. Hmmm.
