1. Quor-Toth
He didn’t like killing. It had made his hands shake and the tangy smell of blood made him queasy. However all of it was ameliorated by the look on Father’s face. He was happy with Steven, proud even. His father had never been this free with praise. Every word filled Steven with a sense of accomplishment. Only belatedly did the boy realize that he was smiling so broadly his cheeks ached.
2. Aftermath
Shifting through the rubble, Connor refused to give in to his fear. It couldn’t end this way. It hadn’t been easy to get help but hidden in all those repressed memories were tales of Watchers and Slayers, like Faith. Connor had his father’s mnemonic skills and he had called Willow’s number. Accompanied by Faith and the local Slayers sent by Willow, Connor had raced into hell and the ‘angels’ won but he couldn’t find his father.
“Connor, over here!” Faith screamed and he raced over to help her remove debris. Under it a battered, pinned Angel moaned as they worked to free him. Through his pain, the vampire smiled up at his son. Connor couldn’t contain his answering smile.
3. Sheepskin
This was one of those normal things that he was supposed to do. It was mundane, so Connor didn’t expect it to have much of an affect on him and yet it did. As he stood inline inside the auditorium, his normally rock steady hands shook. This is ridiculous he sighed then heard the head of his department call ‘Connor O’Reilly.’
He took a deep breath, ran a hand down his highly expensive yet cheap as hell polyester robe then strode out across the stage. He took the diploma and turned to his friends and family and pumped his fist. Connor could see Angel smiling like Connor had just been named king of the world. For his part, Connor knew he was smiling like an idiot but he couldn’t help it.
4. Stained Glass
“If I run now, I could be in Mexico, before anyone knows I’m gone.” Connor tugged at his tie.
Angel dropped a hand on his son’s shoulder. “Do you really want that?” he grinned softly.
Connor laughed. “No and given how many Slayers and witches she has a friends, if I run now, I’d better never stop.”
Angel shook Connor’s shoulder gently. “Good point.” He glanced down the aisle of the packed church as the organ music started. “Look at that beautiful woman, son,” he whispered. “You don’t ever want to leave her.”
Connor gazed at his white-veiled bride to be and love like he rarely felt washed through him. The best day of his life warranted his biggest smile.
5. Sugar and Spice
She was utterly fearless, so much like him at that age, with all his strength. She looked so sweet, a mass of dark, long curls and had his bright blue eyes. Megan garnered coos of delight everywhere they went. Megan made Connor understand almost every stupid move Angel had made with him when he was a teen. He’d do anything to protect his little girl.
Connor was completely thankful for his last Christmas gift of a digital camcorder. He had only meant to capture his daughter’s total cuteness in her black Gi as she practiced her martial arts moves but when Angel pretended to spar with his granddaughter cuteness turned into jaw-breaking smiles and pride enough to fill an ocean.
Connor would never forget the look on his dad’s face when his super-strong little girl swept granddaddy’s feet out from under him.
