The holiday weekend
Nov. 26th, 2006 03:13 pmHope everyone had a nice holiday.
evil_little_dog and I had a nice long weekend. She got here in the early afternoon and the dinner went as laid out earlier. It came out wonderfully. Everything was darn tasty and there is still so much food left. Roy the cat shall be helping me eat turkey for days and days. Mostly just sat around watching TV and working on the shared novel we're writing (those in
nanomowhinging will be familiar with the whole Red Skies at Morning thing).
Now, let me preface this with saying neither of us are shopper by any means but we decided to brave Black Friday (for the non-Americans on my list this is the day after Thanksgiving and is characterized by being the biggest shopping day of the year and otherwise known as Hell on Earth...or at least the Mall). So we truck the nearly 100 miles to the malls in Columbus that I want to haunt. First we hit Borders since a) we both have discount cards b) I've spent enough to earn a shopping day (i.e. more money off) c) i have earned nearly 14$ cash back d) BOOKS. We buy manga galore, some holiday gifts for others, some metaphysical books for ourselves and holiday cards. Buy one get one card set free. Yes they're 15$ a box but that comes down to about 7$ which is what the cheap Wally World cards cost and these are all lovely.
After lunch at Max and Erma's we headed to the mall, subtle dread creeping up (well if we could push it past all the novel talk. Damn villians, still can't get them to do anything). However, not only is it a gorgeous day weather wise, the mall crowds are totally managable. We never waited in line except when I had to return the shoes I got catalog order from J.C.Penny's. Got more gifts from the many many stores (and die Hot Topic for not having the Bleach shirt I wanted but yay for ELD because she found the one Fullmetal Alchemist shirt she wanted on deep discount none the less. Found a lot more gifts (hell, I'm mostly done shopping now), then we left the mall to hit T.J. Maxx and I got not one but two pairs of driving gloves. Leather Driving Gloves. Lined with cashmere. ITALIAN leather...and very gothy looking (one has leather tie ups and the other brass hob nailed look) and both for under the 40$ they were well above originally. I also found the Buddha I've been coveting for yonks, the one which him head in his hands as he curls over his knees so I had to make him mine.
We even went to Carraba's Italian Kitchen and barely waited ten minutes (I was begning to that this as a bad sign that this the biggest and most upscale shopping mall was predicting a downswing in the economy unless people SERIOUSLY came out for all the 5 AM sales). Dinner was yummy, lentil and sausage soup, spiedino di mare and cavatappi. We stopped at Wally World once we were back in Jackson because we needed batteries for watches and tv remotes and we wanted to get cream cheese to try
sarakat's pumpkin dip (yummy!) I found a huge poinsetta dyed various shades of blue covered with glitter. ELD insists it's tacky but I was stopped several times in the store by people who wanted to know where I had picked it up because they liked it. We spent many minutes laughing ourselves sick over the vast array of doggie jackets that I insisted her dogs needed (but didn't get sadly).
Saturday we just cruised around Jackson and shopped locally and looked at the lovely houses from the turn of the 20th century. Went back to the tea house, got some stocking stuffers and some delicious teas including Cream Earl Grey and Cherry and rose petal green, hit a scary antique mall and a Hallmark going out of business (I always feel like a vulture picking bones but I can't not go, you know?), hit the Big Lots too and am now regretting I didn't get the chocolate shot glasses...
Did lots more work on the novel and some other stories and enjoyed the incredible Florida-like Indian Summer (literally in the 70's here). ELD is on her way home now and I'm working on making an exam for the non-majors tomorrow (yes I'm evil)
So how was your holiday?

Sweetie, Walmart shoppers liking the wreath does not in any way negate the potential tackiness. In fact, it's a strike against it *evil grin*
I say this as someone who has a big gold glitter stick wreath thing that I think is the awesome and Mr. Maren shudders at.
Glad your holiday was so good :)

SOOOOO true. It is ostentacious as I told the cashier who looked at me and ELD and said 'i'll have to look that word up.' ELD said 'it's a fancy word for tacky.' I can't help it. I've yet to meet an Italian who didn't go for glitter like a magpie.
oh and how are you holding up now that finals loom
