So, I started looking at jobs today. Found precious little other than the same jobs that have been on the boards for five years. WHAT do these colleges do to their professors that the positions are never filled? I have been however joking with mom that if Flagler College in St. Augustine (the only FL city i actually liked) had a job I'd apply. They do. In precisely my field...for less money than I'm making now in a city that's far more expensive...

There was a perfect-for-me medical type position at Boston University. Let's not even get into the possibilities of living somewhere in Boston comfortably on a professor's salary (which here i don't even know what it would be. Colleges do vary their pay based on years of experience and amount of education the prof holds but still putting a RANGE in the ad would be nice).

Most all the jobs were in California (yeah because that's affordable), Missouri (uh, no, just no) and Georgia (better than MO but still don't see me getting excited)

I wiped out on my new tai-chi dvd but today i put in the Yoga: Just My Size (or something like that) with a plus sized instructor doing the moves. You know, I actually made it through half of it. This is something I think once i get going I could actually DO. The best part: the deep relaxation at the end. Apparently I'm a pirate when it comes to lying on the floor and breathing and oh let's not forget visualizing. Though at the end I could feel my chi tickling and warming the bottom of my feet. I think it was trying to escape.

And as I was perusing unusual city names for one (going back to my home state of PA because it's loaded with them) I ran across Bloody Corners, Ohio. It's apparently between Austintown and Akron...man I just want to move there, don't you?

Are you looking only for positions in schools of med/health science? How about bioscience?

lol, the chi trying to escape made me laugh.

good luck with the job hunting. it really sucks when you have to guess the pay-range or venture a number yourself. stupid human resources people.

You totally need to get a job in Boston. You know why? Because I live in Boston, and then I could very easily bribe you in order to get you to finish all your Connor fic!

See...it's all about my needs. ;)

Oh and Boston is hella expensive but it has a couple of things going for it:

1) it's a cool city
2) you wouldn't need a car, most likely
3) lots of geeks in the area

I love weird names of places. I've been to Tight Squeeze, VA, and lived in Hurricane, WV. Ha! I have a whole lot of these types of things somewhere.

Oh, you can look for HACC jobs at their HACC.edu website. Good luck in your search!

YOga is great for fat chicks! It's resistance training in a way. I totally love it. I even use the relaxation part at the end of a routine to get ready for bed. :-D I could even do some complicated poses that the thin chicks in my class couldn't! :-D

i have a lot of friends in Boston actually though i would retain the car. I don't do public transit. I like control far too much

i swear it was.

and thanks. You know what bugs me is that the pay range is usually 40-50K which is fine where I'm at now but there is no pay increases in far more expensive areas like CA or NY and that is baffling

i'm flat out looking at biology, however that encompasses A LOT. I narrow it by anatomy/physiology which is my specialty.

usually that's not an issue. Work would have a parking lot and i'm far too mobile to worry on gas prices. i'm going and that's all there is to it. then again I wouldn't live in a big city if you paid me so I'd need it just for the 30 mile commute in

I love looking for wierd place names when we travel about. When we were in the Cotwolds a few years back I insisted we visit Upper Slaughter and Lower Slaughter. Really pretty as it turned out. :-)

Ah yes. Paradise is out near Blue Ball and Intercourse. :-D I've been to all three. (There is a HUGE craft store out in Blue Ball!)

From my trip across the US in 2004: Bandana, KY * Cabool, MO * Eminence, MO * Greasy Junction, TX * Bushland, TX * Deaf Smith County, TX * Crazy Creek, AZ * Two Guns, AZ * Twin Arrows, AZ * Dry Beaver Creek in AZ * Bloody Basin Road, AZ * Bumblebee, AZ * Agua Calliente, AZ * Zzyzx Road in CA (that's in LA which explains a lot) * Desolation, UT - which is really appropriate. There was nothing there. Isn't there a town in CA called Hell?

When I went on my one and only Florida vacation fifteen years ago, I was staying at a condo at Ormond Beach, and decided to spend an afternoon in St. Augustine. I fell totally in love with that place and spent about half of my week's vacation there (and would have spent more, if I could have). If I ever go back down, that's where I'm heading again. Loved the history and the quaintness of it. And the cheese of the Fountain of Youth! *g*

I feel exactly the same way. I have no desire to move to Florida, but if someday I did decide to move south, that's where I'd go - if it's still as charming as it was fifiteen years ago.

I'd have to go back and look. [livejournal.com profile] trixiefatcat would probably love to have me in MO. It's not in St Louis, I know that. I actually wouldn't mind there from all sources that's a pretty cool town

Thanks. I'm just not a city person. I like living within an hour's drive but even that wouldn't put me any place affordable up there. Sigh. There was one in Jersey but i forget where now

Something just occurred to me.

I'm not sure if worrying about the affordability of a place is necessarily the way to go. I know it seems really counterintuitive and nuts, but I'm doing far better financially in Boston (super expensive) than I *ever* did in Burlington, VT, which while not the cheapest place to live is certainly cheaper than Boston. Just comparatively there seem to be a lot more jobs here and I'm less limited by not having a car.

Of course your skill set and earning potential, not to mention personal stuff, is quite different from mine, so YMMV. But if there's a place you'd really like to go to, I'd say give it a shot and at least try to find a job there, even if it's not the cheapest.

We have a bioscience program - and here's the link for the opening for an ass't prof, anat/phys: http://www.farmingdale.edu/ifs_quick_links.html

the salary is pretty good ($55k-62k), and the benefits are good, too. Don't know if you want to live on Long Island, though.

Rats! the link just takes you to the website......

At the website, hit "quick links", then look for "employment". Click on "employment", then scroll down to faculty positions. When you get to that page, just look for the faculty position, anatomy and physiology.....

Good luck, if you decide to go for it!

thanks. Yeah that would be hard for me but I did look. They have something in my field but I had two limitations. One I could work around and that's I'm NOT a research PhD but rather have a medical doctorate so I'm less likely to get a job that wants me to do research but the second one is...well one of the reasons I'm HERE. That medical school millstone around my neck is only going to get heavier once they start garnishing my wages. I won't survive in high cost of living areas

But I really appreciate you sending it. I'll ruminate on it
