“No, stay right where you are, Bry. There’s no need to come out in this,” Roy said, looking out the window where the snow was still falling. “Maes and I will be fine. He’s getting some oil lamps ready in case the power lines go down. The fire’s going and I can cook dinner. You stay with Sherilyn and keep warm.” Roy hung up the telephone receiver and looked at Maes who was, as promised, gathering oil lamps onto the living room table. “Bryony is going to stay with Stephen’s sister and Stephen called there to say he can’t make it back into town. We’re on our own.”

“If you could see the excitement in your face at being trapped alone in the house with me,” Maes laughed.

“Oh, like you’re any less excited.” Roy swatted at him.

The taller boy captured Roy’s wrist and pulled him close, kissing him hungrily.

“I think you like being trapped with me just because of the things you can do to my body,” Roy said, his voice roughened, thoughts of sex tumbling in his mind.

“Don’t sell me short. I like you for your brains, too. If I need wheels alchemized onto my luggage, what would I do without you?” Maes ran a hand through Roy’s hair.

“Oh, that’s all I need, to be used and abused,” Roy moaned melodramatically.

“As if you don’t love it,” Maes said, brushing a hand over Roy’s crotch.

“You can’t expect me to think of a response when you do this to me?” Roy said throatily, thrusting against Maes’ hand.

“There’s only one response I need,” Maes proclaimed then kissed Roy, long and sweet, as his hands tore into Roy’s heavy winter clothing. After several more quick kisses, Roy sank to his knees on the woolly rug in front of the fire. He unzipped Maes’ pants and tugged them down. He feathered a kiss over Maes’ cock before swallowing it down. Maes allowed Roy to take a few long, wonderful licks before easing him back.

Maes got on the floor next to Roy, working frantically on his lover’s pants to get them off. Head to tail, they teased, sucked and stroked until Maes climaxed first. With a moment taken to recover, he poured all of his energy to bring Roy off. Once he spilled, Roy twisted around so he could rest his head on Maes’ chest.

“With all the free time and sex we’ve had since we got here, you’d think we’d get tired by now,” Roy muttered, rubbing Maes’ belly.

Maes ran his hand over Roy’s sweating back. “I’ll never get tired of you.”

Roy kissed him. “Good.” Roy jerked, looking around frantically, his body tensing. “Did you hear that?”

Maes nodded. “Out on the porch.”

Roy scrambled for his pants, tossing them on. He looked out the door then up, hearing the cracking noise again. “Oh, it’s the awning, too much damn snow.” Roy took the time to alchemize the snow into vapor so the awning wouldn’t break then shut the door, shivering from the cold.

“Better than a prowler.” Maes handed Roy his shirt.

“Well at least my sister is marrying a detective. He’ll keep her safe from prowlers. I was hoping it wasn’t Stephen coming home after all. It was embarrassing enough to get caught by my sister. I’m not sure I’d survive that being the first time I meet my future brother in law,” Roy said, flushing.

“It’s not high on my list either,” Maes said. “So…we have a whole long night ahead of us. Whatever should we do?” He flashed Roy a coy look

“I know that look and I need a few more minutes to recover,” Roy snorted.

“Sheesh, I was going to suggest a few hands of cards or something.” Maes faked a deep hurt.

“Uh-huh,” Roy replied disbelievingly. “I could teach you how to play Go.”

Maes cocked up an eyebrow. “What’s that?”

“A Xing board game. I brought it with me.”

“Get it.” Maes shrugged. “We can’t have sex all the time.”

“But we could try.” Roy laughed.

A quick wash up, some mouth wash and a complete redressing later, the teens had set the game up on the living room table. Roy had brewed some tea before they started.

“Tea?” Maes asked as they sat down.

“Bry has three beers. If we drink them all, she’ll kill us.” Roy shrugged. “I’ll get her to buy more. She will, if I ask.”

“Oh, I know. Okay, what do I do?” Maes studied the simple board, eyeing the little black and white pebbles dubiously.

“It’s harder than it looks. It takes a lot of strategizing. There was a famous Xing general who made all his officers study this game to sharpen their abilities at war.”

“This game?” Maes asked as if wondering what he had gotten himself into.

Roy nodded and proceeded to explain the game. Maes found Roy hadn’t lied about the difficulty of the strategy game. He also saw a side of Roy he really hadn’t before. Not only did Roy have a quick mind for strategy and conquest, he had a competitive streak big enough to stretch from here to Xing and back again. Roy didn’t like to lose.

When Roy gave back Maes all the ‘prisoners’ he had taken so they could start yet another round, Maes caught his fingers. “We’ve been at this for a long while.”

“Huh?” Roy glanced over at the mantle clock, his eyes widening. “Wow. I guess we have. So…we should find something else to do.”

“I’m open to suggestions.” Maes stretched and Roy watched how his body moved.

Roy drummed his fingers on the table as he contemplated the question. “I’m thinking about something but it might be too…feminine.”

Maes’ eyebrows rose, his eyes going round. “You have me both curious and a little afraid of the things going through your mind.” He stabbed a finger at Roy. “Just for the record, I’m not trying on any of your sister’s clothing.”

Roy made a face. “What are you? A freak?”

“I’m just afraid of what you think is feminine.” Maes leaned his chair back on two legs, batting his eyes at Roy.

“I was thinking about the way we’ve been having sex in oh…just about every room in my sister’s house except hers and then I got to thinking about that huge tub in our bathroom,” Roy said, something wicked glinting in his eyes.

“Ah,” Maes said, following Roy’s train of thought. “Could be fun. It’s not like you’ll be surrounding it with candles and sprinkling petals on the water.” Maes glanced over at him. “Are you?”

Roy made an obscene gesture. “Have you been reading my sister’s romance novels?”

Maes barked with laughter then got up. He held out a hand to Roy. “A hot tub of water and a little play time doesn’t sound girlie to me.”

Roy took Maes hand, giving it a squeeze before letting go. He darted up the stairs. Maes pounded up after him. Roy already had the hot water running by the time Maes dug some thick towels out of the linen closet. Bubbles frothed on the water.

“A bubble bath might be feminine,” Maes said dubiously.

“And my sister claims baths without soap does something to the porcelain of the tub. I don’t believe her and I tell her I could alchemize it clean and she gives me the hairy eye. I’m not dealing with that. Live with the bubbles,” Roy said, taking off his shirt.

“The mighty alchemist scared of his big sister.” Maes snickered.

“Well she is bigger than me and she probably can take me in the fight,” Roy laughed, finishing stripping. “I’ll take the spigot end, I guess.”

“You’re skinny, you can probably avoid the spigot,” Maes ruffled Roy’s hair, kicking off his pants.

Roy eyed him sourly. “It might be play time in the bath for one if you don’t knock it off.”

“Promises, promises,” Maes said, pulling Roy into a kiss.

The teens carefully maneuvered into the claw footed tub. Maes leaned against the high, sloping back, letting one long leg, the dark hairs damped down, dangle over the side so Roy could move in close. Roy nestled in against him and Maes scooped up a handful of lightly scented water, drizzling it down over Roy’s back. Roy licked at one of Maes’ soapy nipples.

Massaging Roy’s buttocks, Maes slowly navigated the familiar, yet exciting terrain of his lover’s body until he could gently caress the boy’s testicles. Roy moaned, his breath curling over Maes’ chest. The raven-haired teen sealed his lips over Maes’ nipple as his hand slowly stroked Maes’ still-sleeping cock. Lips and hands played, teasing flesh into full arousal.

Maes shifted Roy a little, trying for an angle that didn’t make his hip hurt in the confines of the tub. Water overflowed, hitting the tiled floor like a waterfall onto rock. Roy grimaced, peering over the edge.

“Think we drowned the bath mat,” he muttered.

“Death by tall red-head for you,” Maes laughed, nipping at Roy’s chin.

“Then you had best show me the time of my life now before she kills me,” Roy grumbled and Maes did just that.

XXX

The boys snuggled up under the flowered bedspread, watching the fire crackle merrily after Roy had banked it for the night. The soaked bath mat rested close enough to the fireplace to hopefully dry before Bryony got home the next day. Maes ran his fingers through Roy’s hair. “What are you thinking? You have such a pensive look on your face.”

“Guess I’m glad Stephen was delayed,” Roy said hesitantly, feeling guilty over what he was thinking and had been thinking off and on since he thought his future brother-in-law had come home early when the porch had creaked.

“Why’s that? Don’t you want to meet him?”

“I do and I want him to like me.” Roy couldn’t look at Maes and say this. “It’s just…I was really afraid when I thought it was him on the porch.”

Maes rubbed Roy’s chest until Roy turned away from him on the bed; with the newer mattress riding the box springs so their every move wouldn’t be telegraphed to Bryony. “You’re afraid of him knowing about us.”

“Yeah. I know that makes me bad and I’m sorry,” Roy said piteously.

Maes put his arms around Roy pulling him tight. He kissed Roy’s shoulder. “No, it doesn’t. Roy, we’re hardly conventional. Your sister was very understanding but we got lucky there. Frankly, the less who know, the less people can get us in trouble.” Maes tightened his grip. “We’re going to be officers some day. Officers aren’t supposed to fraternize, let alone with officers of the same sex. I’m not mad at you for not wanting to tell Stephen we’re more than friends. It’s safest for us this way, with almost no one knowing, sad as that is.”

Roy rolled over in Maes’ arms, running a hand over his cheek, taking advantage of a field not broken up by eyeglass stems like usual. “You’re not mad?”

“Do I look mad?”

Roy looked into eyes that squinted back at him near-sightedly and he smiled. “No. I just want you to know, I’m not ashamed of us.”

“You don’t have to tell me that, Roy. I already know.” Maes leaned in and kissed him.

Roy sighed, resting his cheek against Maes’ shoulder. “I’ll tell Bry tomorrow, make sure she keeps the secret.”

“And if we’re really lucky we’ll get snowed in by ourselves for another day. I’m thinking kitchen counters next time,” Maes said, tugging Roy’s hair gently.

“Oh right, make sure I’m right near the cutlery when my sister catches us,” Roy moaned.

Maes laughed. “Now there’s an image to sleep on.”

XXX

“I give!” Roy screamed, hiding behind the big pine tree in the front yard.

“I’m not interesting in surrender! I’m after total conquest!” Maes crowed, lobbing another snowball against the tree.

“You suck as an enemy, Hughes!” Roy shouted, trying to shake the crust of snow out of his hair as a car pulled up. Seeing his sister get out of the car, Roy darted over and grabbed Bryony around the waist, ducking behind her.

She squealed. “Roy!”

“Hiding behind a civilian? Oh, you’ll make the perfect officer leading from the rear, Mustang,” Hughes said, stepping out from behind the house with a snowball in hand. “And how sad for you being shorter than your sister.”

“Insult away. If you want me, you have to take down the innocent!” Roy roared back.

“The first one who hits me, dies,” Bryony warned, squirming.

“Is there a problem?” A man’s voice boomed as a hand dropped on Roy’s shoulder. Startled, Roy looked way up into the blue eyes of the tall, lanky blond behind him.

“Roy, this is Stephen,” Bryony said, wiggling out of her brother’s arms. “Stephen, this snow-encrusted miscreant is my baby brother, Roy.”

Roy managed a grin and held out his snowy, gloved hand. “I didn’t know you were bringing Bry home. I’m glad to finally meet you, sir.”

“Yeah and I bet you’re thinking ‘damn, I wish I hadn’t been acting like an ass’.” Bryony shoved Roy.

Roy flushed then Maes dropped the snowballs and joined them. Roy grabbed his friend’s arm, dragging him closer. “This is Maes Hughes, my friend from the Academy. Maes, this is Bry’s fiancé, Stephen Reichert. Did I get that right?” Roy fretted.

“Perfect. Nice to meet both of you boys.” Stephen shoved his large hand out to Maes.

“Same here, sir,” Maes replied, shaking hands.

“Bry, do you need help getting inside with anything?” Roy glanced around to see if Bry had any groceries or anything else she might have picked up from her overnight at Sherilyn’s.

“Nope. If you two are done playing, I’ll make us all some tea,” Bryony offered, ruffling Roy’s snowy hair. “Where’s your hat, silly?”

“Lost it and that sounds good.” Roy followed his sister and her fiancé inside, with Maes bringing up the rear. After kicking off his boots, Roy went into the living room and picked up his tablet. Quickly sketching an array, he alchemized all the snow into vapor, drying his clothing.

“Hey, what about me?” Maes pouted when Roy set the tablet aside without helping him.

“You wouldn’t accept my surrender. You can sit in wet clothes,” Roy replied haughtily.

“Roy!” Bryony bellowed from the kitchen. “Be nice to your guest.”

“He buried me in the snow. I’ll be as nice to him as he is to me,” Roy grumbled but he used the array on Maes anyhow.

“Goof.” Maes shoved him lightly.

“Stephen, could you come here for a moment,” Bryony called and her fiancé headed into the kitchen.

Once Stephen was gone, Roy sat on the flowery couch, leaning forward onto the stack of books on the coffee table. “I could die.”

“Yeah, way to meet your future brother-in-law.” Maes snorted, slapping Roy’s back.

“Kill me,” Roy mumbled into the books.

“Watching you suffer would be more fun,” Maes countered.

“So, you’ll be sleeping here on the couch tonight,” Roy said viciously, not lifting his head off the books.

“Touchy little bastard.” Maes lounged in the chair, then glanced over the back. “Do you need any help, Bryony?”

“Nope, we got it,” she said, coming back out with a tray of cookies. Stephen carried the tea tray. She eyed her slumped over brother. “Did Roy die?”

“Nah, he’s still making whining noises so he’s still with us,” Maes replied, trying to clear a space on the table for the trays.

Roy sat up, gathering his books to him. “I’m not whining, I’m threatening, there’s a difference.”

“Those look like some heavy reading.” Stephen gestured to the tomes Roy held. He sat on the love seat while Bryony poured the tea. Her tea pot, in shades of green from the greenish-white background to the faint moss green roses that adored it and the gold-rimmed tea cups, seemed to fit Bryony, Roy decided. His sister was very feminine in her tastes.

“These? Nah, they’re not so bad,” Roy said, setting them aside.

Maes handed over one to Stephen. “Have a look. It’ll make your eyes cross.”

Stephen opened the book, paging through the cramped print and spiraling arrays. His pale brow furrowed. “I think I’ll stick to detective work.”

“Talk to him. He wants to go into investigations,” Roy said, jerking a thumb at Maes. “I guess it’s probably pretty exciting. That’s why you were out of town, wasn’t it?” His eyes glinted with curiosity.

Stephen nodded, leaning forward to dump two sugar cubes into his cup. “Between here and Circleville we’ve had a series of killings that are remarkably similar. We’re trying to decide if they’re related and, of course, who’s behind them.”

“Scary.” Roy glanced over at his sister, worry in his dark eyes.

Stephen followed his gaze and shook his head. “It’s young men who’re being killed, which makes it rather unusual, too. Sadly, it’s women who usually tend to end up prey to killers.”

“If I could help, I would,” Roy said and Maes nodded his agreement.

“A little of your magic would be welcome.” Stephen sighed, taking a drink of tea.

“Science, alchemy is science,” Roy correctly gently. “And I don’t know how it would help here. Sorry.”

“Can we find another topic for tea?” Bryony suggested, an uneasy look in her eyes.

Stephen hugged her soothingly. “Sorry, hon. So, Maes, what brought you up here to this little town? I would have thought Central would have been more exciting for break.”

Maes shrugged. “Everyone was leaving except those who lived in town. Like Roy, I’m an orphan so when Bryony was kind enough to offer for me to come, too, I jumped at the chance. This sounded more exciting than sitting alone in the dorms.” Maes grinned. “Besides, we’re having fun.”

“And I’ll get you next time out there, Hughes,” Roy added. “It’ll be your turn to eat snow.”

“You have to be cramped up in that little room. I’d offer you a place to stay, Maes, but honestly, I still live at home with seven brothers and three sisters.” Stephen said sheepishly, not noticing the faint blush on everyone’s faces at the mention to the accommodations.

“He’s only marrying me to escape his family.” Bryony laughed, breaking the tension, then kissed his cheek.

“Can’t say that I’d blame him. Eleven kids? I’m surprised your parents didn’t run away from home.” Roy laughed. “We’re used to sharing a room.” He waved a lazy hand at Maes. “Besides, Hughes is sleeping down here tonight. Teach him to shove snow down my pants.”

“See? Whining?” Maes waved him off. “Win next time.”

“Next time I’m hiding your glasses in the snow,” Roy grumbled, scowling at Maes.

“My brother, the sore loser,” Bryony snorted.

“When I get a day off, maybe the three of us can do something, boys,” Stephen suggested, a devilish glint in his blue eyes.

“A man-free house.” Bryony sighed, leaning against him, her eyes fluttering closed.

“Unless you’re leaving soon. Are you going to your mentor’s house?” Stephen wrinkled his nose. “Hawkeye, was it? Bry said you were sweet on the man’s daughter.”

Roy’s face picked up shades of garnet as he sputtered into his tea. Bryony pinched Stephen’s side. “I didn’t mean for you to repeat that to the world, Stephen.”

“It’s okay,” Roy said, almost relieved that Stephen knew about Riza. It would be good for him, at least for this visit. He just hoped Maes wasn’t offended.

“Sorry. Bryony didn’t mention it was a secret when she said you had a soft spot for her,” Stephen said, blushing a bit himself.

“Soft, that wasn’t the adjective I would have used for Roy’s feelings for Riza,” Maes said with a wicked grin.

Roy hit him with a couch pillow, tea going everywhere, drenching Maes and the cream and bronze roses fabric of the chair. He held up his hands. “I know, I know. I’ll clean it.” He sketched another array on his tablet and removed the stains from the rug and furniture.

“You didn’t break my tea set did you?” Bryony glared at him.

“Going to fix the parts you scalded?” Maes hissed, blotting his trousers with a soaked napkin.

“Sorry, I’m no good with healing alchemy.” Roy looked at him smugly. “And the set’s fine. That I could fix.”

“Did I mention my brother has a temper?” Bryony asked wryly, patting Stephen’s knee then wagged a finger at Roy. “Do not break the house, Roy.”

“I think he could fix it if he did,” Stephen said appreciatively. “That alchemy really is handy.”

Roy nodded. “It is and we can put all the soft-hard talk about Riza in the not-to-be-discussed pile. Besides, if I even think of looking at Riza, Teacher threatens to remove certain body parts using his favorite alchemy.”

“His expertise is flames,” Maes provided helpfully and Stephen’s eyebrows shot up.

“Risky business going after that girl.” Stephen wagged his head.

“Riskier yet, he doesn’t know I’ve enlisted. He hates the military. Teacher thinks I moved back here with Bryony.” Roy sighed, picking up his tea cup again. “I hate lying to him. I hate lying period but really, this was something I thought I had to do and I couldn’t make Teacher understand.”

“Well, if you think you’re doing what’s right for you, that’s the important thing,” Stephen said and the support made Roy feel marginally better.

Roy shrugged. “Wish that were true. I might never learn the alchemy I wanted to because of it. It feels like a waste.”

“I don’t think any knowledge is ever wasted, Roy,” Stephen said and Bryony squeezed his hand, obviously proud of how he supported her brother.

Roy smiled. “Thanks. And since you offered, I think it would be fun to go and do something without my sister around.” He smirked at her.

“By all means, go. I’ll gather up some girlfriends and celebrate a day without funky boy smell in the house.” Bryony grinned back.

“Your sister is mean,” Maes said, wrinkling his nose at her.

“Tell me about it. You sure you don’t want to run for the hills, Stephen?” Roy glanced over at his future brother-in-law.

“I would but there’re those ten brothers and sisters waiting at home. I’m probably safe here,” Stephen laughed.

Bryony slugged him. “I really will be glad to see the back ends of you three.” She got up. “And on that note, I think I’ll get dinner started.”

“Need help, sis?”

“No, you sit and chat and get to know each other or should I say burp, scratch and giggle at bodily noises or whatever passes as male chatting?” Bryony smirked at them then sailed out of the room.

“What did you do to that woman growing up, Roy?” Maes arched an eyebrow at his friend.

“Me? She was always that way. Good luck to you, Stephen. She’s scary.” Roy laughed.

Stephen wagged his head. “Yeah, but I love her.”

The boys looked at each other and started snickering. Stephen scowled then broke down and joined in. Roy relaxed a little as Stephen started asking him questions about what else he was doing at school and his hobbies, the simple mundane things people wanted to know when starting friendships. Maes, himself, steered the topic back to Riza Hawkeye and Roy could have punched him but realizing Maes wasn’t really put out by his old crush was a good thing. Roy had meant what he said about not being embarrassed to be with Maes but he wasn’t ready for a world that wouldn’t really approve to know about it. Roy could tell now Maes was just as serious about that as he was. So what if Stephen thought he wanted Riza – and a part of him still did even now - it served a purpose.

Even more importantly, he liked Stephen. Roy could gladly see his sister married to this man. Teasing Stephen about when he could expect to become ‘Uncle Roy’ ended up with the young alchemist in a head lock. Laughing and thrashing, Roy pleaded, “Maes, help me!”

Maes leapt up and yanked on Roy’s legs, helping Stephen to take him flat to the ground. “Bryony! If you want to pay Roy back for wrecking the house, now’s your chance. Come tickle him, while the tickling’s good!”

“Should have known…you’d turn like a snake!” Roy rasped out, wiggling helpless against the two bigger men.

“Keep his arms still, Stephen. They’re what make an alchemist dangerous,” Maes said.

The police detective laughed. “Thanks, buddy.”

“Did I hear the promise of tickling?” Bryony poked her head back into the room then descended on Roy like a warrior queen from legend.

Roy squealed and squalled but there was no escaping the wiggling fingers. Finally, after promises of puking on them all, Roy won freedom. Red-faced and sweating, Roy found himself on the carpet in front of the fireplace, panting while Maes rubbed his back. “You will all die bloody death,” Roy promised and they all laughed at him.

“Buck up, Roy. You can’t tell me this isn’t the best break ever.”

Roy looked from Stephen to Bryony before his gaze settled on Maes. He smiled. “Yeah, it really is.”

I loved this chapter. All of the teasing was really fun. The boys are cute together, and I like what you've done with Bryony and Stephen. The allusions to the Hawkeyes were tantalizing.
