Maybe that's the problem. I know for myself I tend to take a class less seriously if I feel like it's too easy or like the instructor isn't challenging me. On the other hand, if I think a class is really killer hard, I'll try really hard in it because it's more of an ego boost to actually do well in it.

But I could just be weird.

I've heard you mention giving open book tests. Open book tests are NOT hard, pretty much by definition.

i don't give open books EVER. There's one for the non-majors where they may use their labs but that's it.

Well then, there's probably a fundamental disconnect between you and your students, where you're very very very smart and they're only normal smart. I had that problem in a math class once. I think the teacher was probably brilliant and I had a hard time since I'm merely reasonably intelligent. That and math isn't my strong suit.

probably from me bitching about them failing open notes lab practicals. Had a student ask today, 'the test on monday IS open book, right?' Not in your best dreams sweet pea.

I think the real problem is that I'm in the Appachalians, the mountain range that gave us the term 'hillbilly' Many of my students are functionally illiterate

Oh yeah, that's probably it. I don't know what a lab practical is, so I think I thought it was a test of some kind.

Ah, so the problem is that they're st00pid. That's gotta be frustrating.
