Saguaro Ntl Monument is AWESOME!

However, be careful of which cactus you piss on! There is a "jumping cactus" out there, too! It's needless come out because of static electricity if you get too close. I drew a comic about that with my "Funny Animals" characters. :-) I loved the desert!

good point. I hated it. I don't like heat at all and it was about 113 the day of that picture.

Go to Albuquerque, NM. That place is HIGH up in the mountains. It doesn't get as hot and it has some snow in the winter. :-) I absolutely LOVED A'que.

I disliked Pheonix. Too many people. The only place that I have traveled that I can say that I absolutely HATED, however, was LA. Too many people, too many crazy bastards, too much traffic, I couldn't breathe (you could see the air!!) and I felt strangled.

I've been to that part of the Saguaro National Monument! I may have even used that rest stop! (At least, it looks familiar - but a lot of the state and national parks in these parts use that natural stone look... *g*)

Phoenix sucks, but Tucson is grand.

Don't worry, jumping cactus doesn't really "jump." It just grabs you if you touch it (with clothes, shoes, skin) and hangs on REALLY tightly.

(I need a good desert icon, apparently...)

I will agree with you that Phoenix sucked. I didn't like Tucson either which was where I was stationed. Then again after military bases is usually NOT the happy side of town.

AZ made the list of places I didn't want to live in or really even visit much (which eventually i probably will since i have so many friends there...but i haven't been back since 91)

that one dates back to 1933 built by the CCC so it's entirely possible. I did like hiking in the desert.

that is hte one desert city I actually would like to visit.

LA sucked. NYC was no better. I used to work there. About the only good thing abotu Chicago is the food and the music

In my comic strip, I drew the male fox and female cat taking a walking tour of a cactus garden. The fox has to take a whiz so he wees on a cactus... a jumping cactus! Ah yes. The hilarity stylings of "America's Funniest Home Injuries"!

Oh, I do pin striping (see my black and purple icon). I have a green one that I think looks like a cactus. If you want, I can shrink the design down so you can use it for an icon. :-)

In the areas of Albuquerque I visited, we saw the old adobe buildings in the center of town. The murals of the artsy district. The gorgeous campus of UNM (had to go see the geology exhibt). The people tend to paint their adobe's very colorful and bright. The streets are wide so as not to feel overly crowded. I'll try to find some photos if I can and scan them.

As for the cities I've been to: Baltimore is ok. DC is a set of museums and gov't buildings surrounded by slums. Philadelphia is simply a cluster f*#k of streets that aren't labeled with hidden traffic lights. Everytime I've been to Philly, I've gotten lost. And I don't mean, one street over, I mean, where the fuck are we?? DC can be difficult to get around in, too, since it's laid out like a wheel with spokes unlike most cities which are grids. Cleveland was nice, right on the big lake. I hated the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, though.

It's b een years since I've been to Baltimore, DC same feeling. HATE Philly (and that's not a place to get lost in) but i'll be there this year. I wanna see King Tut. I lived four years in Cleveland and was not impressed but i was raised in Pittsburgh and they train you from birth to hate the mistake by the lake.

Pittsburgh isn't a bad city but you know which city I actually liked, i mean really liked, would live in it happily, Madison WI

Tucson is my home town, and one of the prettiest places in all Arizona - and these days, that even extends down to the base, although that is rather desolate. Still, there are mountains, grand ones, all around... beautiful!

Hee! Yes, it CAN be funny (also very painful - as the victim of bullies in junior high, someone once threw one at me!)...

Thanks, but I got minorly industrious and found some online pics; I have to get the camera and go take some of my own. :-)

then you know where I was, Davis-Monthan AFB and was working out of the VA hospital there (which did have a nice Spanish design to it).

I'm just not cut out for desert life. the day to night temperature swings wrecked both my sinuses and my arthritis.

From: [identity profile] wildrider.livejournal.com
Yep. My mom worked at the VA for 35 years - and at that particular location from '73 well into the 90's - you probably overlapped her. *g*

I suppose I can see that. I never do like the really hot weather, but I never had allergies until I moved to Phoenix - in Tucson I was fine.

it was an impressive VA. They were pioneering limb salvage for diabetics (and i would have been there the same time as your mom) getting orthopedic surgeons, podiatrists, vascular and disease control working together(which is no mean feat)

I'm not sur what it was. For years my dad thought I was nuts when i said how sick Tucson made me until he found someone else who had the same experience in the desert (because you know if someone ELSE tells him it's believable)

She was in dialysis. I think Mom was a pretty great nurse for all it was for her a secondary career choice (she wanted to be a phys. ed teacher).

Very strange (and your Dad, too!).

Then chances are I definitely worked with her. I rotated thru the dialysis unit.
