hunting for goodies
Apr. 28th, 2007 06:11 pmSo I went to the heritage plant sale today and I have to say something must have gone wrong at the greenhouse. It was about half the size it was last year and the plants much much smaller. It’s supposed to run a week. I’m SO glad I went on day one since they’re nearly out of anything interesting in under three hours. Of course none of this saved me from spending too much and getting too many plants. I was annoyed however by the flat of six tomatoes costing 2$ but individual plants costing 3$...um what? Oh really I know what. MOST of us have a) limited land and b) an intense desire to experiment with many types so most of us were likely to get just one plant of each type (and pray they’re self fertilizing….)
So what did I get? Tomato-wise I snared something called a green zebra (green stripy fruits, no idea HOW I’m supposed to know this one’s ripe), Hillbilly Potato leaf (has an orange/yellow speckled fruit), Black Sea Man (let’s hope this black one is better than the Tulan I got last year), Cherokee purple (popular with various tribes way back when), Italian heritage (I DID buy a six-pack, I’m wondering if they’re related to San Marzono’s) and a six pack of cherry tomatoes called Riesentraube’s (which I’ll surely end up calling Resembool’s) that I can grown in buckets on the porch.
I also picked up a six-pack of Siam Queen Thai Basil, a cultivar from 2000B.C. called a Job’s Tear, a cultivar from the 1500’s called Love Lies Bleeding and a Mt. Fugi morning glory which I’ll probably regret.
I made it to the hobby lobby and found the cone end findings I wanted and a few other things and the new bedspread I bought in March FINALLY made it here. Sheesh. Well back to making finals for me
