The festival of lights
Nov. 10th, 2007 08:16 pmironically my power went out here
me and my neighbors standing on the porches (like proper hillbillys, no one had on shoes) WTF happened to the power? do you have power? why does the power go out on SUNNY days? then my neighbor is the one helpping to arrange the Diwali festival today and we were talking about it and scaring the other neigbors.
luckily i had decided to put my hair up in rag curls because the power did not come on in time for me to look good!
So off i go to the Hindu Festival of Lights known as Diwali. If you want to know more head here. Basically they had a cultural program in the school's theatre then dinner. It was a nice dance program from the premonition of Buddha's birth up to his teachings. (the theme this year being Buddha, the Enlighted one). I did take a lot of pictures (i'll share them when i go to work on monday.) However since my digital camera is a less expensive one and I had off the flash (too far back for it to help anyhow) my photos are an experiment in color and movement. You can't make out the dancers (too bad, Siddharta was cute). The shutters (or our digital equivalent) were open LOOOONG to bring in the light so the dancers look many armed (which in a Hindu festival seems somehow appropriate). I enjoyed it. However, our Dr. Suresh was short, bald and had basset hound cheeks.
Dinner was sadly chaotic because our cafeteria is kaput for rennovations and the hall we took over did NOT lend itself to dinner. I did meet up with Dr B's family (it was his wife I was with, in the haunted theatre, not the witch but the other adult I mentioned). I have half his kids in class and now I finally got to meet him. Wish i could have talked to him more but points to above mentioned chaos. I did get to talk to E. the new math hire and P. the Indian math prof who wanted me to come so badly.
Dinner was delicious (noting that very few non-Indians had more than nan and rice), Me, i had it all. Being the seat of the spice lands, India has it going on. There was a curry lentil dish, some creamy slightly sweet thing with peas and paneer (love that cheese), some spicy okra dish, a spinach and potatoe thing and some kind of shredded carrot dessert that I'm going to ask P. if she knows how to make. yummy.
it was a fun time.

(I bought two strings of white LED Xmas lights on Friday; I suppose that could count very peripherally toward celebrating the festival of lights!)
