I kept saying that at the end of three years my contract is up and i can NOT be rehired on this same track. The head of the department didn't think so...got the letter today. I'm done. I knew it. I can NOT be rehired on a non-tenure track.

However, if the college wants to hire me on a tenure-track I can be brought back. BUT that means they have to legally readvertise my job and I have to reapply. naturally, I'm a known entity and they like me so chances are I will be hired unless someone dazzling sweeps into town. I've only been teachin a total of 4 years so i'm still a cheap date salary wise.

The dean said today that they need my position so it's unlikely that it won't be reoffered in January. However, I do see a catch in this. what if they don't want to offer a tenure track position? Then I'm out-out. sigh.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I hope they either rehire you properly or that what someone said upthread -- about this being a good thing disguised as bullshit -- turns out to be true.

What sort of UI would you get? I know you'd be applying for other things in the meantime, but I wonder if this would at least be a chance for you to polish up a novel enough to get it seriously circulating to agents and/or publishers? Perhaps a small silver lining?

(These things are on my mind as possibilities because I myself have one week of employment left, and generally take over a year to find another job, while UI lasts...less than a year. But I've promised myself to plunge deeply into the writing and get at least two novels sent out very soon, and a proposal for a non-fiction book.)

Anyway, I know it's very scary. I hope they rehire you -- and don't leave that till the last minute too. They owe you the time to make other arrangements if you have to.

UI would be very very bad. It's bad enough if I'm NOT picked up for tenure after three years. Colleges would look poorly on not getting hired at all.

I'm already working on other arrangements.
