taken from half my flist (and hoping the other half gives it a whirl)

What’s the last thing you wrote?
I just wrote some porny FMA stuff that’s not up yet but original fic, I’m hard at work on Splinters of Silver and Cold Iron an 16+ YA urban fantasy novel I’m working on. That I put up on LJ? Sorrow’s Dark Array, an FMA wip.

Was it any good?
Actually I think all three of the above are pretty good. Splinters and the porn need work but Sorrow is pretty smoothed out

What’s the first thing you ever wrote that you still have?
I’ve tossed most of my old stuff, including 90%of my old paper zines at long last but somewhere there is still an old Star Wars Mary Sue I wrote in 1977 when I was ten. It’s a reminder as to why not to blast someone else’s Mary Sue and just click on by. Beside they could be some 13 year old kid posting for the first time and we were all young and not so damn good once upon a time.

Write poetry?
rarely. I’ve done some. Some hasn’t sucked but it’s a struggle

Angsty poetry?
naturally

Most fun character you ever wrote?
Hmm most of my characters I enjoy in some way or another. Maddelena from Machiavelli Moon, Tully from Ties that Bind, Tarran from Red Skies, Makai from Until the Ice Breaks and Killian from Splinters are all very easy to write so from that stand point I guess them

Most annoying character you ever wrote?
probably that Mary Sue from 77 but recently hmmm Tarran but he’s meant to be or Tully. They’re both dicks.

Best plot you ever wrote?
Probably Machiavelli moon and with [livejournal.com profile] evil_little_dog Ties that Bind

Coolest plot twist you ever wrote?
In case any of these things ever make it to a shelf, let’s just leave it as they all have at least one.

How often do you get writer’s block?
not much. I’m a writer without an off switch. Only if I’m really sick or super busy am I not writing. The more you stress me the more I write

How do you fix it?
I’m very good at writing upwards of 6 things at a time if not more. If I get stuck on one I set it aside and work on something else

Do you type or write by hand?
by hand mostly. I don’t carry a lap top and I can scribble on paper in meetings and look like I’m really into the meeting when in fact I’m bored stiff and am doing something else. I used to be able to have my class notebook on one half the desk and my story notebook on the other and never miss a beat with it

Do you save everything you write?
Damn near everything, yes

Do you ever go back to an old idea long after you abandoned it?
very often

What’s your favorite thing that you’ve written?
Machiavelli Moon, Ties that Bind (which I wish we could really get to editing)

What’s everyone else’s favorite thing that you’ve written?
my writers groups have really enjoyed both Ties and MM and are now enjoying Until the Ice Breaks and Splinters. Fan work, Hyperion’s Son, a Connor-centric BtVS/AtS crossover

Do you ever show people your work?
as much as I can

Who’s your favorite constructive critic?
[livejournal.com profile] evil_little_dog definitely. I used to have another friend who loved it but ever since I introduced a gay character she’s hated everything I’ve done. Guess that speaks for itself. (Still astounded and hurt) the crew at [livejournal.com profile] nanomowhinging are also very helpful

Did you ever write a novel?
many, five of which are done, one of which I’m actively marketing

Have you ever written fantasy, sci-fi, or horror?
all of the above usually with a touch of mystery

Ever written romance or teen angsty drama?
no romance. As a subplot maybe but it’s my least favorite genre. Teen angst? Does a murder plot on a fantasy world count? Then yes (Ice breaks) or Werewolves, Seers and murder then yes (splinters) but straight teen angst that could actually happen uh no

What’s one genre you have never written, and probably never will?
romance, or 'mainstream literary'

How many writing projects are you working on right now?
Red Skies, Until the Ice Breaks, Splinters of silver and Cold Iron, Ties that Bind, Melt into the Wind, Burning the Darkness and more fanfic than I can keep track of

Do you want to write for a living?
I want to publish

Have you ever written something for a magazine or newspaper?
School papers and yes I’ve been published in magazines mostly in the 90’s.

Have you ever won an award for your writing?
hmm actually I’ve not really entered any

Ever written something in script or play format?
yes but even though dialogue is my strength I find this HARD

What is your favorite word?
eyes, I seem to use that a lot

Do you ever write based on yourself?

There’s some of me in a lot of the characters but one that’s 100% me no

Which of your characters most resembles you?
Alcine from Melt into the Wind and Maddelena from MM

Where do you get ideas for your characters?
things that happen in life. Occasionally characters I’ve seen elsewhere that I thought wow wouldn’t they better if they were like THIS

Do you ever write based on your dreams?
yes I do

Do you prefer happy endings, sad endings, or cliff-hangers?
my fantasy works tend to be cliff-hangers, but over all, happy endings

Have you ever written anything based on an artwork you’ve seen?
I’ve done it for assignments but never just out of the blue, not yet but I HAVE been tempted

Are you concerned with spelling and grammar as you write?
no, I get that on the first revision

Ever write something entirely in chatspeak?
No, I have pride

Does music help you write?
yes, I can’t abide silence as I work

Are people surprised and confused when they find out you write well?
I’m not sure why they would be.

Quote something you’ve written: okay excerpts more than quotes here

Splinters of Silver and Cold Iron - (two werewolf teens, Killian is a seer, set in Madison WI where I used to live)

Tazia didn’t argue and they usually studied math with Lenore who was such a math geek. Tazia let him put on his special music mix. Depeche Mode’s Personal Jesus boomed out of the speakers. She watched Ben dance, a big goofy grin on his face. He always beckoned for her to dance with him. Sometimes she did, sometimes she didn’t. Today she just shook her head, and he started tossing in some of his “fancy dance” steps to the beat. Ben had a good sense of rhythm but his sense of style was uniquely his own. Only he would think of doing pow wow dance steps to 80’s music.

An 80’s aficionado, Ben loved everything about the ‘Me’ generation from the clothes to the music to the wacky hairstyles. Not that he’d ever cut off his long hair, which he considered his tribal badge of honor, but everything else was up for grabs. He had been in seventh heaven when he found parachute pants in his size at Ragstock on State Street and promptly wore them to the first dance at school that he could. Ben was the type who could pull it off. He was so selfless and fun to be around, with an enthusiasm for life that grabbed everyone around him in a bear hug until they were having a good time, too. High school would be such a dark place without Ben.

“What do you think of the new guy?” As the music blended into Rock the Casbah, Ben got his back field in motion.

“He’s quiet...kinda odd but then, aren’t we all?” Tazia stretched out on the couch.

“I saw you eyeing Killian’s lack of an butt,” Ben said, wiggling his to the beat. “You’ll break a twig of a boy like that, Taz. You need to think large and in charge.” Ben poked a finger into his chest. While not really fat, Ben carried around a little extra weight.

“I was not looking at Killian’s butt,” Tazia protested even though she had checked out Killian’s butt and it was small, would probably take two hands to find. “Speaking of butts will you be taking yours for a little skinny dipping at Lost Lake for the traditional plunge after the first snow fall? Ligeia wants to write a piece about that right of passage.” Ligeia wanted to be a journalist. Tazia didn’t doubt that Ligeia would go looking for classmates who had seen Marcus last once the shock had worn off tomorrow.

“I don’t skinny dip, Taz. I chunky dunk.” Ben grinned at her and sadly by summer he would be even chunkier. He did it to himself every year. He had the best of intentions of exercising but Ben liked sitting on his butt playing video games too much. He faced every spring having to diet so he wouldn’t look like a bratwurst in feathers once the pow wow circuit started. “But luckily I’m so well hung that I can brave icy water without fear of shrinkage.”

“I need bleach for my brain, thank you,” Tazia said, rubbing the palms of her hands over her eyes to rid herself of the image.

Machiavelli Moon – (narrator is a vampire, her friends, werewolves set in Deadwood SD where I used to go most weekends)

After the last set, Wicahpi disappeared and the pack moved over to our table. Soon last call had come and gone, and we were the only ones in my bar, talking the night away. I guess that’s why we couldn’t possibly miss it. The sharp report of a gun echoed through the building. We were all too stunned to move at first. Two more cracks sounded and werewolves and vampires alike raced upstairs into the sleeping floors. A few bleary-eyed guests poked their heads out. We ignored them as we headed for the third floor.

All of us had noses good enough to track the strong scent of cordite. I brushed ahead of Caksi who had been loping along ahead of us all. The smell was leading us to something I was truly dreading, room 323, the room I had given to Wicahpi. The door hung open. The smell of blood made my fangs ache in their sockets.

Naked amongst the crumpled sheets and blood lay Wicahpi and Tricia. Wicahpi was at the foot of the bed, his head hanging over the edge. I could see the wound in Wicahpi’s smooth abdomen. At the head of the bed, Tricia was missing most of her face. There was another wound in her gut and a trail of blood and rumpled sheets led up to her as if she tried to escape but didn’t get very far. Behind me, the pack began to wail.
