Steven often heard Father lament about the edibles they didn’t have here. There were no sweet ripe blackberries, juicy strawberries, no succulent tart apples to be made into pies in autumn. There wasn’t even really an autumn per se. No tea to relax over, nothing to act as a spice for their stews. The young boy had asked why they hadn’t just eaten the plants growing around them and Father explained that plants could be very toxic and the only way to know for sure was to try them. He wouldn’t risk their lives. Steven wondered what he was missing.

Buffy studied him, wondering how he was bearing it. She put her fingers over the names, Angel, Spike, the men she loved and lost. “I’ll plant the roses.”
