Pauline Gedge writes about Ancient Egypt. Her books are really good.

The best one is "child of the morning." It was her first book. It might be harder to find because it was written in 1975/6.

You might want to try Scroll of Saquara (sorry if my spelling is off) which is a nice little mystery/thriller.

OR The Twelfth Transforming (which is huge) failing that House of Dreams and then House of Ilusions.

How can you tell she's my favourite author?

I do like ancient Eygpt. I'm surprised my friend Liz never suggested her. I'll give it a shot

I am not sure how available she is in the States. I've seen her stuff on Amazon and that... so she shouldn't be too rare. She's a Canadian author and she doesn't seem to be super well known up here.

And so I shall check out your LJ. Thanks. Haven't read Goodkind in a long time. I should like to see this series. BareNaked Ladies should be easy enough and I've been dying to see that movie so once I determine if my new place of living HAS a rental place (I may have to drive 25 miles to the next town) and it's ready to rent (which I think it is) it's on the list

1. a movie- Eric the Viking. Made by Terry Jones of Monty Python fame, this has to be one of the best movies ever made.

2. a book- China Mieville's Perdido Street Station or The Scar. IMHO, the best of the 'new weird' writers.

3. a musical artist, song, or album- Hmmm. Let's see now. Depends what you like, but there are some great (and legal) mp3s at the Fat Wreck-Chords site at www.fatwreck.com. Check out Against Me!, Anti-Flag, Less Than Jake, and the Descendents.

4. a Greatest Journal or LiveJournal user not on my friends list- I think most of the journals I frequent, you already know about.

5. what I should have for dinner- Anything with sour cream and sweet chilli sauce on it.

6. a website- slashdot.org. They had a very cool story on origami yesterday, with links to nifty pictures.

7. a quote- "It's a way of talking about sex, and fear of sex, and death, and fear of death, and what else is there to talk about?" from Neil Gaiman's Fifteen Painted Cards from a Vampire tarot.

Neat. Thanks. God, it's been forever since I've seen Eric the Viking. I would love to see that again. Not sure the MP3's will come over this dumb dial up but I can try. I accidently froze my sour cream. I highly recommend you don't do this! And another author I've never heard of. cool. I hope by the end of this, I'll have a whole list of names to hit the library with.

Mieville is definitely worth it. In the US, you can probably even find his new one- Iron Council, which isn't out in Aus yet (*sulks*), but PSS and The Scar should be in libraries.

From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
The Scar is not. PSS is. I believe IroN Council was the other one availble. I'll have to interlibrary loan it but didn't ask yet. The library had the Passage by Willis there that was recced and its 600 pages long...I'l be there a while

The Passage by Connie Willis was Vamped VIxen's book suggestion. I read the dust cover and it's about a pair of doctors manufacturing Near Death Experiences to study them and I'm thinking 'like that horrid movie Flatliners?' and they actually joke about the movie. The book is quite good so far even if it's straining my poor hand's weight limit!

movie: A Midsummer Night's Dream with Kevin Kline as Bottom. How can you go wrong with Shakespeare? Plus it's so pretty!

books: Passage by Connie Willis

song: Don Henley - Damn It, Rose. It reminds me of the whole Darla-Angel-Connor story line. See:

"Now, pain is what you've given
And sleep is what you'll get
So far away from that sweet baby child
Who hardly knew you yet

Now he'll grow up to be a fighter
Full of anger, full of shame
Like all the other haunted children
Who wonder why they came
And he'll be in and out of trouble
Until he stands up or he falls
But there will always be a shadow there
No matter how it goes
Damn it, Rose"

Cool a new song and a new LJ and a cruel dinner suggestion since my best bet for this is Wal-Mart who has these amazing looknig dulce con leche filled massive squares. What's stopping me a) it's Wal-Mart b) they put the bakery and the seafood dept side by side c) I don't think it comes made with a diabetic option...you know I'll eventually lose my resolve..

Oh I loved that movie. Kevin was so darn cute.

three replies so far, three author's I don't know. Cool because I only moved up here with enough books to last a month so I'm happy now.

1. a movie Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead. (tim roth and gary oldman!)
2. a book The God Particle, Leon Lederman. OR The Golden Compass / Subtle Knife / Amber Spyglass Trilogy by Phillip Pullman. Outstanding works, both of them.
3. a musical artist, song, or album The Black Keys.
4. a Greatest Journal or LiveJournal user not on my friends list Can't help you. I stay in my corner.
5. what I should have for dinner Fried tofu with blackbeans (including the sauce) & Various peppers & onions & carrots. Over white rice.
6. a website http://www.nabiscoworld.com . Gotta love miniature golf. Also http://www.shockwave.com. LOTS of games, brainteasers, etc. Both great for wasting time.
7. a quote Hmmm... "All I want is a warm bed, a kind word, and unlimited power." A classic. :)

I loved that movie too. Haven't seen it in a dog's age. I think I'll try the Lederman book. Never heard of the Black Keys must look for them and dinner sounds yummy minus the rice (rice and my blood sugar do NOT mix)

Min. golf? You must not have heard the story of me maiming the clown on a min. golf course

Penguin Boy hasn't been able to make it through the first... three chapter of Lederman. I think it's hilarious. Dry humor, though, is my style. It's a really good introduction to quantum mechanics, and will introduce you to my favorite theory thus far if the universe - the higgs boson.

The Black Keys are very blusey. If I hadn't sent that twit boy upstairs my Thickfreakness cd, I'd burn a copy for you. :)

I almost choked on my lunch. [laugh] Do tell.
