The American Library Association has posted their list of 100 most frequently banned (challenged) books. So it's also read a banned book time. Go, read, fight the stupidity. As for me I've read the following 3,5,6,7,8,13,16,18,19,20,22,23,28 (for research in case anyone's wondering, not being gay figured it's best to do the bookwork to write better scenes), 32,37,40,41,47,51,52,55,56,60,62,69,70,71,72,73,77,83,84,85 (wow half my high school reading list is on here) My life goal is now to be banned as many times as Stephen King.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] aaronlisa put me on to a writing community[livejournal.com profile] 100words_100day  where you basically committe to write 100 words a day for 100 days. Most seem to be tallying up by the week. I did the tally of the stuff I REMEMBER writing (there's more I can't remember) and wrote over 20,000 words last week. No wonder my hand and ass are numb.

What's the reasoning for these books being on this list? I mean "Bridge to Terebitha?" or "The Headless Cupid?" These are two books that were a huge part of my childhood.
It's very scary when you see lists like that. Especially when you see how many classics are on that list. Also I recognized some from my school reading days.

I don't know why those two are on there. MOST get there because some twit finds them offensive because of...well name something. Religion, Sex, race, they claim Where's Waldo has naked pictures drawn in...

I see... That's still bad. I think Bridge to Terebethia (i know I am spelling it wrong) because of the death in it. And the author of Headless Cupid, while a lot of her books were pretty dark for children's lit.

Death is another big one. MOstly it's the religious right after books showing magic, non-Christianity, or sex and those thinking a book has racist undertones like HUck Finn because it has slaves in it (which sad to say were a reality in the time period so do we pretend it wasn't?)

It's a small group from what I can see. You probably already know half of us. I figure anything to help prod us into writing at least a little (like last night I was stuck, only got out 1700 words more or less)

Wow I just went and looked at the banned books list. Half the books I read as a child are on there. That's just...amazingly wrong. And the Harry Potter books? More childern are reading now then they have in ages because of those books. All the sudden because of Harry Potter reading is cool and they want to screw that up...

The stupidity of people never ceases to amaze me. I'm a Christian but to blame religion for banning these books just makes those of us that have a brain (yes I'm actually including myself in this category this time) look bad and it makes me wanna whap people in the head with a 2X4

Wow...I'm still just stunned they wanna ban these things.

Like I just mentioned to catlove, while i worked at a library a group of Christians tried very hard to ban the Bible because of the sex and violence was inappropriate for their children...and the fortune telling within (let's not forget the witch of Endor) You just sit there going you're banning your OWN religious text? Makes you want to go live in a cave somewhere

That's some list of banned books. I've read about 10 of them, give or take (considering HP as 1, too) and I can't believe how narrow minded someone has to be to ban any of those books (well, to ban anything at all, actually).

My life goal is now to be banned as many times as Stephen King.

ROTF!!! Go you!!!

No lie while I was working as a librarian assistant, they tried to ban the Bible because of the sex and violence (and this was a christian group. I just sat there trying not to giggle)

lol, well, of course... trust them to ban the big book of their religion! Next: banning of the ten commandments because they make references to sex and violence too.

as long as I live I'll never understand some people and I'm glad for it. I'd be afraid if I understood, I might start falling under their sway...

wow i've read so many of those books and never knew they were so controversial.

I've actually had this happen to me though. In 7th grade we were banned from reading "the giver" by lois lowry (on that list) and it happens to be one of the most amazing thought provoking books around. My stupid school.

Haven't read that one. I'll have to give it a try. My school never tried to ban anything luckily. Years after I graduated they tried to ban our mascot (we were the Blue Devils)

Too tired to make notes, but I think I've read a decent part of that list. I know some libraries banned Harry Potter, but I didn't think it'd reach the top list. How odd.

Some of the highly conservative religious groups have been making lots of noise. My highly conservative republican born-again cousin asked me about them when I was at his house a few weeks ago and I was thinking here we go and all I said was anything that gets kids reading is a good thing. They're good moral stories. To my surprise he was content with that. He doesn' allow his kids to read them or goosebumps but that's his choice even he didn't see the need to force libraries to remove them.
