Maes glanced up from his paperwork, hearing something peculiar. Ignoring Havoc’s admonishment that the ‘boss’ wasn’t to be disturbed, Maes peered into Roy’s office. He had been assigned to the East to assist on a big investigation. Theoretically, he was staying in the visiting officers’ quarters and using a broom closet of an office over in Investigations. Instead, Maes planned on sleeping at Roy’s and had co-opted a space in the man’s anteroom with his men.

With the way Roy was hunched over an enormous book on his desk, Maes foresaw him bringing that tome home, leaving Maes with an evening of staring at a highly distracted, dreadfully dull alchemist. Roy was reciting what he was reading or so Maes surmised. Maes lounged against the office’s doorjamb. “Sri ram?” Dark eyed flicked up, irritation riding in that hot gaze. “You learning gibberish?”

Roy leaned back in his chair, cracking his neck. “Ancient Ishbalan, actually.”

“They have their own language?” Maes came into the office, shutting the door behind him, then flopped onto the chair. “I guess that makes sense.”

“They used to believe in alchemy, too.” Roy flipped a page. “I wonder what changed.”

“The ones who believed probably all died of boredom reading that stuff.” Maes muttered under his breath. Roy barely acknowledged the slight. Maes sighed. He would need to do something to get Roy’s attention come evening.

Maes looked in the mirror as he painted himself with something he had picked up in a bakery; quick-hardening icing. It wasn’t easy to draw fake arrays on his torso with a pastry bag but he was determined. He was also hoping the arrays were fake. He didn’t want to accidentally make an array that would make his penis fall off or something equally horrible when touched. Once the icing was dry, he gingerly buttoned up his shirt and sat down to wait for Roy to return. It itched but only a little.

Luckily, Maes had gauged his time right. It didn’t take long before Roy came back. The alchemist paused, looking at Maes on the couch. “What?” Roy asked.

“What do you mean, what?”

“You have such a look on your face.” Roy kicked his boots off. “You want something.”

Maes hiked up his shirt a bit. “What makes you say that?”

Roy squinted. “What’s on your belly?”

“Oh, this?” Maes opened his shirt. “I thought this might be the only way to get your attention given the way you’ve been looking at those alchemy texts.”

Maes had expected one of several reactions to his painted body; lust, amusement, the ‘I don’t believe you’ eye roll, what he never expected was for Roy’s color to drain away. “Roy, what is wrong?”

Roy didn’t answer, sagging weakly. Maes leapt up off the couch and grabbed his arm. “Roy, what is it?”

Shaking his head, Roy staggered over to the couch, almost falling onto the pillows. “You couldn’t know,” he whispered.

“Know what?”

“I learned my alchemy from someone’s skin.” Roy’s voice quivered as he spoke.

Maes’ brow furrowed. He hadn’t expected that. “What?”

“Just what I said.” Roy shuddered. “I had to erase that text.”

“Riza’s back…you told me you hurt her but would never say why. Always thought it was an accident.” Maes couldn’t keep those words in but once they were out there, he felt completely ill. “Her father was your teacher.”

“Forget that you know that, Maes, please.” Roy’s dark eyes seemed impossibly huge. Even in combat, Maes hadn’t ever seen him so wild. “She wanted the knowledge tattooed on her back gone…and I did it. I hate myself for doing it.”

“Was there no other way?” Maes rubbed Roy’s back.

“I did as little as I could. A lot of the design is still there. She would have been crippled…died if I tried to remove it all.” Roy stared at a spot on the couch. “There were probably other ways but our minds weren’t working then.”

“Will you be fine if I go wash this off?” He tipped Roy’s chin up, looking him in the eye. “Promise me you’ll stay right where you are.”

Roy nodded listlessly. Maes powered through a shower, scrubbing off his hard, wasted work. He tugged pants on over damp legs. He didn’t like Roy sitting around in this sort of mood. He could get extreme in his depressions. Roy was stretched out on the couch, shivering, when he got back out there. Maes trailed his fingers over Roy’s cheek.

“I’m sorry, Roy.”

Roy sat up. “It’s not your fault. You couldn’t know.” He stared up at Maes. “If not for what happened, your idea would have been very hot.” A weak smile staggered across his face. “I appreciate the effort.”

Leaning down, Maes kissed him. “Come on.” He nodded to the bedroom.

“I’m not in the mood any more.”

“Not that.” Maes caught Roy’s arm, gently hauling him up. He got Roy into the room, encouraging him to undress a bit. Roy obeyed, wooden and obviously without any desire to be naked. Maes flipped the covers down and Roy collapsed into bed with a soft sigh. Maes wrapped himself around his friend, letting Roy snuggle up close. Neither of them said anything. No words were necessary. Acceptance and love had a language of their own, transmitting through touch.
