Author’s note- written for the quote meme I snagged from
lillypuff. This one was written for
roguewords who wanted Abby and got the quote - resistance to tyrants is obedience to God – Thomas Jefferson, motto . This is what that idea inspired. Thanks to evil_little_dog"> for the beta

Abby had seen the detritus of so many deaths since coming to work for NCIS. More than once it had been a coworker and friend that had lain dead in Ducky’s morgue while she sifted the clues frantically to help Gibbs and the team find the killer.
Some days she didn’t know why she stayed with it. This was one of those days. Uploading bloody crime scene photos so she could do a reconstruction, Abby was struck by how senseless death could be.
Joshua Pittman lay dead downstairs, only eighteen years old, fresh into his time with the Navy. He’d been furloughed before his deployment only to end up confronting his drunken, abusive father. In her mind’s eyes, Abby saw him choosing the Navy just to get away from this man. Josh had been a good kid, judging by what McGee had said about the case, standing up to his father to keep him from beating Josh’s kid sister, only to catch a steak knife to the heart. There wasn’t going to be much of an investigation. There were witnesses. Mr. Pittman was on the run but Abby had faith that wouldn’t last long.
Why did she do this? She asked herself daily and the answer, when she shook off the slimy coat some crimes left on her skin, was obvious. Because the Joshua Pittmans of the world deserved justice; because she could help. She had a gift for this. And her own world would be a darker place without Gibbs asking her ‘got anything for me, Abs’ as he handed her a caf-pow; without Tony’s ability to work flirting and movie references into any conversation; without Ziva’s cool, reserved friendship and most of all, the close loving relationship with McGee. She felt like she and Tim were two people with one mind some days. He needed her as much as she needed him. What they did was worth the sacrifice, this much Abby did know.
