rather than the words on the page. Twice this year I ended up applying to places that had caveats that made me totally wrong for the position.
This time the steampunk thing for circlet press is a total no-go... Now i knew they didn't take any kind of graphic violence or non-consensual stuff, no horror. But me and another writer BOTH missed the 'no murder' caveat. Hell I sent the guidelines to everyone who edited my work for this and none of them noticed it either since hello, my story is a murder mystery...
I pulled up the guidelines one last time before submitting and saw that. So guess what, won't be submitting it. I'm not really that depressed about it. Actually, I think it's for the best. This story really needs space to sprawl out and not feel rushed. Even the 'long' version of the short story seemed way too easy, too pat. The main character made some massive mistakes with his once and future lover and his brother and there really isn't any reconcilling that before they fall into bed so...nano it is. THis year I'll be going into it with a plan.
I DID however 'sell' the reprints of Do Nothing, my urban fantasy story, that ran in Nothing But Red to the Atwood Review which is just the college's newsletter but what the heck.
