Last night was a study in fun. It’s been SO long since I’ve done something like this. This is the way a date should be. Okay it wasn’t a date, it was a group of coworkers getting together and hanging out. Yes, I know most of us would consider that torture. Most of us don’t have my coworkers.

First 8 of us headed to Athens for dinner and a show. Because I’ve only ever been to the Donkey café and bar (the coffee house where all my nano meetings were) in the winter and coming from the south I had no idea that a mere two doors to the north was a tiny little Middle Eastern restaurant called Salaam. It was ‘north African and Indian subcontinent’ in influence (read Moroccan and Indian which I just love). They had Moroccan green tea and mint on the menu. I proceeded to drink SIX glasses. The meze platter was a tad over priced for a dollop of hummus a dollop of babaganoush and four dolmades but they were delicious. I got a chicken and artichoke tangine (it’s a conical Moroccan covered baking dish that I have seen at Marshals and/or T J Maxx but too small for real use), basically roasted chicken with lemon sauce and chickpeas over basmati rice. Along with that came the curried couscous salad my friends had raved about, more veggie than couscous made with cinnamon curry that I now must find. Delicious, every bite.

The play was at Ohio University with their students, The Tempest . It was better than professional productions I’ve seen of this Shakespearean play. It was amazingly good. Miranda was a little shaky but Prospero and Caliban were top notch and since they carry much of the show it worked. Using surrealism as their backbone, they pulled influences from Magritte, Edo-era art, Elvis, Leonardo da Vinci and even Courtney Love, of all people. Prospero’s outfit was full on Magritte. They changed up a few of the sexes in this, giving Prospero a wicked sister and made the clown Trincula into well…Courtney Love. Trust me it worked. The drunken Butler was an Elvis clone and the whole scene with those two and Caliban plotting to become king of the Island complete with Vegas Era Elvis one-pieces and showgirl tassels was hysterical. Even the high school kids were having a great time with this (the school was visiting). The blue screen background to showcase Prospero’s magic was wonderful, especially the hell hounds using muppet hand sticks on the enormous spirit with da Vinci wings projected there.

Afterwards we went to the Donkey for coffee and conversation. I was the only one that noticed the backroom was designated for a benefits concert, Stop the Stigma (what stigma I’m supposed to be stopping was never elucidated, so I’m still confused). But they were just wrapping up and it was open mike night. I just wanted to grab the first guy and tune his guitar for him. I’ll never say I can’t sing again. Sheesh. But realizing that we were getting loud and others were getting angry I led everyone outside to the patio chairs for more conversation and people watching (oh the things we saw)

Realizing that unless I wanted to run all the way back up to Jackson today to get some stuff for graduation tomorrow (this same group of people and several others always get together afterwards to party), I headed to Wally World at 1 AM. Let me just say all the freaks are there, from the yes you must be prostitutes to the sot trying to stuff 100 huggies into the tiny space of his beat up miata (time to get rid of the sports car and be a grown up my poor man…or should I say teen). Explain to me why there was a huge LINE at 1 AM. Does no one sleep?

This is why I’m thinking of sucking up an hour one way trip to work every day to move to Athens. I miss this sort of life style. I miss it a lot.

That sounds like an awesome version of the Tempest. And cinnamon curry sounds delicious.
