fma_fic_contest’s ‘candle’ prompt and this is the slightly longer version that couldn’t make the 250 word limit. based on the multi-cultural tradition of ghost story telling. Thanks to
evil_little_dog for the look over and title
Candlelight flickered over the circle of youngsters as the girl holding the candle used her best creepy voice. “The handsome young man walked the girl in the blue dress home from Mom’s bar because it was so late at night and he didn’t want anything to happen to her. When he got her home, a kiss was his reward. The next day he came back to Mom’s bar and saw the girl in the blue dress’ picture on the wall. You know the one, Roy, over by the jukebox.”
“Yeah,” he muttered, trying not to let his sisters know the ghost stories were getting to him.
“He asked Mom about her and she told him it was impossible for him to have walked the girl home because she had been murdered by a jealous lover in that very bar a decade ago!” Ivy grinned.
”When she blows, out the candle, the ghost will come, Roy.”
“Nuh-uh, no such thing.” Roy was glad they couldn’t see him looking around frantically as Ivy blew out the candle. “See?”
Suddenly something light and feather stroked across his face as someone blew in his ear. The seven year old shrieked, racing up the stairs in the dark. His sisters laughed loudly.
“It’s not funny,” a faint voice said in the dark. “I died in that bar!”
The girls screamed, nearly knocking each other over as they raced up the stairs. Chuckling to herself, Chris turned on the lights and picked up the feathered brooch they had used to tease Roy. Pretending to be a ghost probably wasn't her best idea but it was funny. No one would be sleeping tonight. Smiling to herself, Chris headed upstairs to pry Roy out from under her bed.
