Which leaves me asking WHY are we awarding fiction that sucks when good stories get no play?

My daughter is looking for manga recommendations--I told her I had grownup friends who read manga and she thought that was pretty cool. She is mostly into the drawing style at this point, but wants to start collecting more manga. She's almost 12, and still thinks sex is kinda icky. Can you suggest any series that she might like? Especially with female heroines or at least major characters?

that's hard. Many i read are far too adult. Also the Japanese are still big into sexual divisions. There aren't many kick butt females and most female heroines are relegated to Shojo (girl's books, 99% romance)

Naruto is considered for the younger crowd though it is violent (and only one girl for the longest time)

Fruits Basket

Ghost Hunt (it's horror but the main character is female)

My favorite Fullmetal Alchemist is a little on the violent side but excellent strong roles for both sexes

Dramacon

the older stuff like Nauiscaa would also be good

ranma 1 1/2 is an old standard (its a genderbender though)

I wanna know the same. I've read more entertaining stories online (okay so it's only fanfiction but still!) than I have in actual novels lately. Although I'm plowing through The Book Thief by Markus Zusak which I really think you'd like.

It's about Nazi Germany as narrated by Death. As one reviewer says he doesn't "sugarcoat" anything but the dark humor is addicting. It's comparable to The Diary of Anne Frank but I think it's actually much better then that.
