remember that dream I had where [livejournal.com profile] lyrangalia was driving badly and wouldn't stop for the really creepy cool cemetery which looked a lot like a cemetery I've had many dreams about?

Well I was leafing through the sunday Columbus Dispatch while talking to mom and they had a creepy travels cemetery walk article and I started yelling into the phone, it's it! I found it! and I did. It's the cemtery
from my dreams. No lie the middle and right hand picture have been in my dreams for years.

It's crown hill cemetery and it's in Indianapolis so I'm thinking screw going to IN to see [livejournal.com profile] evil_little_dog for thanksgiving. Let's go for spring break and go up to Indy. I think I HAVE to go. I might just be buried in there and I need to find myself

Back east and the Midwest, there you probably have the best cemeteries... There are some really cool ones out this way, but they're all really young by comparison (except the pioneer and Indian ones, I suppose). There's a pioneer cemetery in North Phoenix I keep meaning to visit, but haven't gotten to yet. (It's not impressive, just very old.)

When I was young, I used to like to go to a very, very old church cemetery where only a few small graves were left because the church was long gone and the grounds were deserted -- those lonely graves always fascinated me. When we went through Zuni when I was adult, alas, they'd been moved. I wish I'd gotten pictures when they were still there.

oh we really do. NY had so many wonderful ones, Cleveland, Maryland. I've been to so many truly neat ones.

Also have plenty of those abandoned ones all over the eastern seaboard and here in OH too.

I've been to Boot HIll but that's the only one in AZ

There are some really awesome ones here, but you have to FIND them - Boot Hill is so touristy it doesn't retain its beauty, not like it used to be; but there's a lovely one in Mesa and one down in Tucson, and those are just the ones I've SEEN.

That one we went to in Santa Fe, that was stunning -- there was a tombstone that had been displaced by the giant tree that we guessed had been a sapling planted by the family when the little girl who died was buried (I need to find all the pictures I took there).

The only ones I've been to back east have been Arlington and Gettysburg.

haven't been to gettysburg since i was a kid. I should go

Boot HIll is all replaced headstones (well wood) anyhow and not tremendously interesting outside of its history

I would like to go to Santa Fe. It's one of the few SW cities I have always wanted to see. I'd like to see the pictures if you find them

The first time I went to Boot Hill (when I was a little girl), the cemetery hadn't been "restored" and most of the original markers were still in place. It's a shame they couldn't have done more toward keeping the original look and feel, but it is a very old cemetery, and wasn't much more than a place outside of town to plant bodies; although the Jewish section does have some nice permanent stones.

I'll see about digging them out and scanning them. No digital "back then" (about nine years ago, now -- yi!).

the new Boot Hill markers DO manage to look old but just knowing people stole the others sort of ruins it.

yeah I know what you mean about the pictures...

Well, the famous ones, anyway; most common markers were replaced with simple metal crosses bearing a name and date.

Yeah, definitely. We were there in I think '02 or '03. I have to find those pictures now, too...
