There was NOTHING on this morning as I was getting ready so I shoved in Howl's Moving Castle and listened to it. I get a knock at the door and it's my next door neighbor. He goes 'this is really weird but i had to ask. Are you watching Howl?" I'm like yeah, sorry is it THAT loud? I'll turn it down and just come tell me if it's too loud since I've lost about 30% of my hearing and I can't tell.

He says no no it's just that Howl is one of his favorite movies and he had no idea no one else liked it. He and his wife are anime fans. Guess i'll have to clean the living room for anime parties...

I had to lecture to 6 graders today who were on a field trip. The person who was supposed to have it all ready for me since i had less than 10 minutes to do this all DIDNT and there wasn't enough chemicals so I just did a demonstration instead of letting them do it. I started talking about how detecting biological molecules could be used to solve crimes and a couple of them piped up you mean like CSI and Forensic Files (and I'm thinking who is letting nine year olds watch that?)

You know the sad thing? These 9 & 10 year olds asked more questions answered MORE of my questions and understood the lab better than any principles of biology class I've ever taught (where I usually do this lab). I'm not sure i could handle teaching this grade. they wore me out in an hour but it was NICE to teach kids who were still curious about the world and not wrapped up in if they were going to get laid or drunk tonight.

There was one little boy who would NOT shut up. Finally I said to him you must be a real handful in class. He just beamed broadly and said yes I am (and he looked remarkably like my friend's son). Well at least he knows it. WHen I wrapped up early that same boy demanded to know if my skeletons were real (yes) and he insisted I bring out real brains. So I brought out a real sheep brain and sheep pluck (heart and lungs and trachae) and let them glove up and touch it. They loved it. One little girl told me she couldn't wait to take my class for real. Thanks sweetie.

ETA between painful hand and the fact it took FOUR hours to pay bills on dial up tonight I didnt' get much writing done

9246 / 50000 words. 18% done!

Aw, that is nice that they're still full on enthusiasm to learn before their contemporaries mock them into becoming ignorant sloths.

Aw, sounds like the class was fun, albeit a little draining. And anime parties ftw. XD

Cool to know the kids are interested. If it would only last.

The boy reminds me of one we had on a tour of the newspaper a couple of years ago. The tour always ends with the press, which usually gets a good reaction. This time it led to the following conversation:

Boy: If you fell in, would you be squished flat like a pancake?

My editor: Well, that's why we're always careful around the press.

Boy: What if you jumped in?

That's it in a nutshell - well said!

That's very sad that these kids were more into your class than your regular students. But it must have been a refreshing change.

Very cool that your neighbors are into anime. I love when you have things in common with neighbors.

I'm so glad you seemed to have a more than decent day. My sister and I are the only people, I'm pretty sure, in my NEIGHBORHOOD, who might even know what anime is, let alone enjoy it.

And I know you haven't really watched House in a long time (I, myself, was finally driven to stop early season five when it became clear they didn't understand his name was the freakin' marquee anymore), but that kid you mentioned? HOUSE.

*giggles* If you're not up to reading the draft of part one I sent you, it's cool. I'll be starting physical, etc., therapy soon (the occupational therapist who left about an hour ago said that my right leg is pretty obviously weak but it can be fixed with a couple weeks' diligence) so I might even be too tired to write.

I was exhausted just doing all this walking and moving today. Ugh.

Don't put that on innocent sloths! That's their natural disposition! Human beings are socially awful with intent!

I absolutely loved Howl's Moving Castle! Even though the book and the movie are nothing alike, they are both great in their own right!

Sounds fun with your class, I can only hope my daughter is that excited about school. I'd be so excited to poke a brain! heh

I agree this is one time I didn't hate that the book and movie were today different. Iloved them both.

I hope your daughter is too. Being that excited is a good step toward a bright future. Poking brains is fun

i'm probably in as total opposite of neighborhoods from you as I can get but i'm just as stunned that ANYONE knew what anime was here. It's cool.

Snort. This kid could definitely grow up to be a House.

I'll take a peek when i can. I hope your therapy goes well.

It was rather pathetic but now when MY students tell me they cna't get it because it's too hard, I'm bringing this up.

it is cool my neighbors are usually toothless rednecks so this is nice

Do you prefer the Japanese version or the English?

Date: 2009-11-06 05:46 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
I used to be subtitles only and listen to them ALL in Japanese. But now that it's so popular and they are getting much better voice actors I listen to both. however if it has bad english VA's I go to subtitles
