yep, you heard it here first. It's my turn to trot out [livejournal.com profile] salomesensei's icon. I put in three 'are you smarter than a fifth grader questions as extra credit on today's bone practical in lab. Where is the Tower of London. ...

I had one put vertebrae (ribs) for the ribs. And later put false vertebrae for false ribs....honestly, after 13 weeks of anatomy you don't know a vertebrae from a rib??? They put hip answers in the skull. Skull answers for arm bones. And this is them STUDYING. They haven't put in one ounce of study time on muscles which is in two weeks. They're going to get slaughtered.

One of them came in today at 1030 and asked 'isn't there class today?' Um yeah there is but we start at 1230 on Tuesday. MWF we start at 1030 speaking of which where were you yesterday. He then asks for his grade (a solid 50%) and asks well i can still get a C right? Sure, in an alternate universe.

In health news,my knee freaking hurts and you can't even tell it's a knee it's so swollen. Ah well. The more bothersome thing is my gastric paresis is acting up (my stomach doesn't move well. food sits and I get nauseated. It decided two spoonfuls (literally) of soup was enough but i did eat most of my meal to keep my sugar right and I've been on the verge of throwing up for hours. bah.

ETA - still plugging away. The closer i get to the end of nano the less description my prose has. way to go, loser.

I'm sorry about the nausea, but are you sure the gastric paresis is at fault and not your students' test results?

If you ever made a questionnaire, it would be interesting to see how nonmedical folks on LJ score versus your medical students. :/

well it could be both.

i should lock some questions here and see how you all do

Ooo I would love to do that! If I wasn't so lazy, I'd go into the medical field. I find it all extremely fascinating (hated going to school though, which is sort of a requirement for these things).

hahha yeah just a little training needed for medicine. though rad tech doesn't need that much and pays pretty well.

maybe for the final...

Well I've been putting some thought into becoming an ambulance driver. I seriously love driving trucks way too much, and the idea of doing something to help people (and having a siren with lights!) is tempting. Once the business is more secure, I'll look more into it. Right now all I've been able to find out is that in NY I will need a bus driver endorsement and a CDL. I would be required to take some courses on basic life support. A lot of this would depend on what hospital/company I worked for (like who would pay for what). I will of course post about that if and when it comes to pass.

From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
yes ofen you have to be full blown EMT which is about a year's training.

don't get me started on bus driving back in pittsburgh they're making over 80K. That's twice what I make to drive a freaking bus

Yeah, it looks like it depends on the company. Some require a Red Cross course, and others require the full EMT (which a year isn't bad). One of my cousins is an EMT, and his brother is a regular driver (just the basic first aid). I would hope the company hiring me would cover the costs of any courses required. I'll probably have to get my own CDL and certificate though.

Doesn't look like it would bank me a lot of money (driving delivery trucks on the other hand, would). I definitely will be getting my CDL in the next year or two anyway, but what route I decide to take with it, I'm not yet sure. Off loading box trucks of milk and donuts on the weekends could be fun too (though no sirens).

i've just known too many truckers (via my uncle) and seen how busted up they end up very early in life. i think i'd rather drive the ambulance

From: [identity profile] angelfirenze.livejournal.com
Seriously? ...If I were allowed to drive, I'd be trying to drive a bus. Even here, for the DDOT. But, then again, for the crap I've seen them put up with firsthand, I almost want to say eighty grand is totally warranted.

HOME TRAINING, PEOPLE!

I totally second that! But...then again, I kind of feel like I'm asking for a test just because I know lots of medical stuff in general and am showing off.

If you filled it with tons of specialty questions, I'd faceplant like everyone else. *freely admits*

It would be interesting to see how a bunch of nonmedical generalists do compared to people who are studying. The results wouldn't quite be random chance, but I'd still be curious.

Sorry your knee is in such rough shape, and your stomach too. Hope by now you are feeling a bit better. Also, thank you for the calcium suggestion. I'll give it a try...can't hurt, right? *would be the one to suffer from too much calcium XD*

Date: 2009-11-18 05:04 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
yeah so do i. France....

thanks. life isn't going so hot you know.

Too much calcium would give you different issues :-). Most women don't get enough and in a recent study revealed 100% of women do not have enough vit D during the winter months

Date: 2009-11-20 01:56 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] angelfirenze.livejournal.com
My neurologist (one of many, good grief) is crazy about telling people about Vitamin D and how everyone in my state is absolutely below the proper levels because of the limited amounts of sunshine here, especially during our now lenghtening fall and winter seasons.

I've been on 50,000 units a week since January and have to get my blood tested on the second of December to see how much better it is.

I need an Ed versus milk icon despite the fact that milk only has about 500 or so units in an entire gallon, which doesn't do very much. Still, it'd fit.

Date: 2009-11-20 02:22 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
hahaha yes the icon would fit

mom was just put on that many units too. I'm not sure what my levels are

*winces* You and [livejournal.com profile] kiptripsyc should really have a chat about that gastric paresis.

*wibbles for you both*

Also -- about your idiot students. I...it might be my passion for medicine in general, but...why are these morons in your class? They're obviously not fussed about becoming medical professionals or anything of the sort at all.

I'm...simply flabbergasted. I don't want to tout having recently had brain surgery, but -- wow. Have they cracked the textbooks? Maybe instead of the test, you should look at the spines of their books. Just for this week.

*exhales*

*breathes again*

Wow.

Um. Are you at all functional enough to look at the Gibbs/Gracia/Elysia scene I've now written?

I have an idea to tie it into the episode where Kate babysat the amnesiac and is since doubting herself, but that'll come later.

I want the point to be driven home by (poor) Gibbs that he doesn't trust himself around Gracia and Elysia right now because they're all hurting and he'd die before he took even emotional advantage of anything that might still be between himself and Gracia, even if she doesn't currently remember much.

But that's for a little bit later. Right now I'm trying to focus on Gibbs being totaled in the emotions department and Gracia and Elysia both picking up on that, even if no one realizes it.
