I guess it's high time to make a sticky post.
On a personal note, I'm a very science oriented person (she/her). I was a foot/ankle surgeon until an injury ended that. Now I'm a biomedical professor in a small college. I've been writing in fandoms since 1977 and active in group fandoms since the early 80s with Elfquest and Pern back in the paper zine days.
If I had to pick my latest fandom right now (2024) it would be The Owl House and Hazbin Hotel. That along with Prodigal Son, Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel the series and Fullmetal Alchemist make up the bulk of my AO3/FFN offerings. They're the ones I write meatier stories for.
I've done smaller stories, flash fic and drabbles in SO MANY fandoms, Star Trek (my forever fandom) of all flavors, Star Wars, The X-Files, Lucifer, Doctor Who, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, and a crap ton of anime especially Saiyuki, D. Gray-Man and Blue Exorcist among others.
I write from PG to explicit, het, LGBT, poly, vanilla through BDSM. I write some dark stuff as well but that's what tags are for, right?
In addition to fandom, I write original fiction and have been published professionally for over a decade now. I write LGBT under one pen name and have started branching out into YA and other things under a different name. I write mostly SF/F, urban fantasy, steampunk and horror. I would love to write mysteries but my concentration is off for that right now. I'm always on the look out for alpha and beta readers (and happily will do exchanges or if you're in the mood to be part of a low pressure critique group that exchanges once every six weeks, PM me). I do a writing post every sunday (usually)
I'm big into history/historical traveling, gardening, hiking (currently on hold hopefully not forever after destroying my knee) and cooking. I'm sure there's probably more that could go here but this is a good introduction to me.
Blanket transformative works policy Anything of mine on AO3/FFN (under this same user name) need you to ask me to use it. Often I am thrilled to say yes but please NO feeding it into any of the AI things out there please. You want to podfic it? Great. Make art for it, love you forever. Moodboard it, yay. Make a play list? go for it. Feed it into AI, nope. Just ask, I'm easy to work with. Also I'm planning to dip my toe into Squidgeworld too this year as a place for my fiction.

Birthday called on account of rain
Jun. 17th, 2025 09:51 pmEverything I wanted to do was either rained out or closed INCLUDING the freaking mall. No lie, after giving up on anything I wanted to do I settled for going to a restaurant I wanted to for years (for lunch) I decided to just hit TJ Maxx/Homegoods and turns out they're remodeling and that whole part of the strip mall was closed. You have to be kidding. (and I didn't check the first restaurant I wanted to try and it is only open for dinner. head desk)
I did get some yummy food and coffee at Shouf's and later for dinner I had deep fried pickles and spicy peach wings (those were yummy too) My birthday pie was the same premade bake it yourself pie we've had many times but this fruits of the woods pie must have had the oldest hardest rhubarb in it, so a disappointing end to a disappointing day.
I hopethoughtsbykat, my birthday twin has a good one too.
I did get a cool set of horror comics from Betty, looking forward to reading that. And there are things on the way from other friends.

I almost forgot fannish 50's women of fandom (and I accidentally skipped The Owl House) So let's do Prodigal Son
One of the best things about this crime drama was the sheer amount of strong, competent women. I couldn't pick between Dani Powell and Dr. Edrisa Tanaka. Both are capable, intelligent women. Edrisa is my favorite by a thin margin with one major exception.
In reality if I am anyone on this show, it's Edrisa. She's intelligent, talky, sex positive, into threesomes and bondage and cuddle parties and has my original dream job. I loved her. She was funny. She was caring and fiercely protective of her friends.
So the issue with her, the overly flirty nonsense that crossed the boarder into harassment multiple times (and coupled with the fact it's also a negative Asian stereotype, though when the character was conceived she was Irish based on the name change) Even when it was obvious others on the team were uncomfortable with it, she didn't stop (it did lessen somewhat as the season went on) And she is never confronted about it (or sent to HR) That was disappointing.
Dani was much easier for me to write. (I couldn't capture Edrisa's comedy well). Another smart character, tough and also kind going from not enemies to lovers with Malcolm but annoyed to best friends. I wish we had gotten more of her back story. She had some much potential. She didn't require the men to help her but when they had her back she didn't act like she thought it was patriarchal bullshit, just a partner helping another partner. About the only time I was truly annoyed with her was when she tried to interfere with Gil getting together with Jessica (her reasoning was not based entirely in fact) It was meant as her protecting a father figure but it fell short.
I'm still very bitter about this show's early cancellation. I think my injury played into it. I was in the hospital watching Pson, watching Fox bragging it was the #1 show on TV for weeks and then at midterm they suddenly stopped promoting it and a few weeks later it was gone taking the cast by complete shock. I miss these women.

Found a farmer's market
Jun. 16th, 2025 11:10 pmwent shoe shopping today, a thankless and fruitless task but I did stop for sushi for lunch (found one of their rolls the Boston Bay roll, a deep fried tempura treat stuffed with crab, shrimp and egg) and on the way to the pharmacy found that the farmer's market at Holy Trinity was on. I got caramelized onion humus and dill pickle humus and ranch dill pickles. I'm happy until I got home.
EVERYTHING I wanted to do for my birthday tomorrow is closed for absolutely random reasons like fire alarm installation, delays in opening for the season and 'no reason given.' So annoyed. Ah well.
It's music monday. We're up to K in the alphabet. Like I said I'm sharing from the last 5 years but feel free to share any K songs you'd like to

It's been a lot of rain
Jun. 14th, 2025 09:26 pmLike a lot. Like buckets. The dog birthday party was canceled. We did go out with my brother and SiL for the parentals' anniversary and my upcoming birthday. It wasn't bad. Got to play with their crazed kitten.
My brother taped my leg up to see if part of this pain is a fibular nerve entrapment.
Last night Dad liked my hair (because inside it looks brown) but tonight outside noticed hey it's violet and of course it becomes 'you sure know how to attract attention to yourself.' (i.e. how dare you?) Did not engage.
I found a few fun things mostly forspikesgirl58 but I think we can all 'enjoy' these.
As for this one, I want to know what combo of drugs you're on to come up with this combo. And also what possessed anyone to publish this recipe.

I could have sworn I wrote nothing but I knocked out 1300 words of my next Yahtzee story. This one feels like it’ll be nothing but a bridge.

Jun. 13th, 2025 08:41 pmToday I went to the expensive greenhouse today and got chocolate mint and trailing rosemary which I have never seen before. Still edible like the standard rosemary this one cascades and can be used as ground cover. I like that idea.

If the pcp I wanted to take over here would have called me back....but I did find out my phone was called two days ago but never rang thru. Gah. Whatever. I have an appointment when a new to me surgeon back in OH. His name is sever...not the best name or THE best name for a surgeon depending on how you look at it.
OPI nail polish did a zodiac theme. Gemini was boring white so I bought Scorpio instead beautiful blue
My friends sent my parents 60th anniversary cards. They were so happy with that.

Have the king of horror for Friday the Thirteenth. This is probably one of King’s more controversial quotes and often misinterpreted too but regardless, editing is important. I wish I enjoyed it more. It was funny one of the author’s group on that zoom meeting prefers editing to drafting, complete opposite of me.
Word faulted out HARD on me today. Lost a lot of what I wrote for the finish of the story. I recreated it but it’s not nearly as funny as the original. And then when it saved, Word put it under a complete different file name which thankfully I had posted that story so I could retrieve it. Sigh.

The urge to slap CVS into next week
Jun. 11th, 2025 09:57 pmSo I went to pick up an ungodly amount of meds from the cvs near the parents' they texted me yesterday about 2 that it was too early to fill. I get there and get the others but NOT my toujeo insulin. Where is this?
CVS - um it's on hold
Me - you texted me about everything else why not this?
CVS - we don't know
Me - WHY is it on hold?
CVS - you have to get in another line to ask that question
Me- goes to other line, muttering
CVS - we don't know WHY it's on hold
Me - is it covered because my insurance keeps threatening to kick this one out of formulary.
CVS -yes, we can fill it now or do you want to come back?
Me - i live 18 miles away. FILL IT (took them over an hour to manage it which should be a good thing because they didn't have the humalog yesterday. You know the most common insulin out there)
I keep saying I'll be doing a pride month book rec and I keep failing so here have all the LGBT books I've read this year (amazon links, no covers because I'm tired and in pain)

Disco Witches of Fire Island magic realism 1980s so this is steeped in both the casual sex scene and the horrors of the rise of AIDS (so this is not really a happy story)

What I Just Finished Reading:
The Witch's Orchard by Archer Sullivan PI mystery very much enjoyed this (no having the sleuth do something stupid to get in danger!)
West By God - horror, this was...honestly it could have been a journalist mystery without any supernatural elements and been better for it.
What I am Currently Reading:
Anima rising - a good reads Frankenstein retelling giveaway win but also real person fanfic of Klimt and others and so far it's not great.
Dark Entry - a short suspense/horror novel I got last year
A Spell to Wake the Dead - a YA horror arc that is...good but man one of the main characters I want to drop in the ocean
What I Plan to Read Next: Something for the popsugar challenge probably or one of the books I won from Goodreads

The weather today was actually lovely
Jun. 10th, 2025 10:28 pmAfter all that rain. I even sat outside and worked some. Tried to garden but the empty pots were filled with spiders and bugs and I ran away. I shall try again another day. Zucchini and me and spiders don't mix.
I've also been learning odd things lately like in my search for things to do in Kansas City MO (for my conference next year) I was nosing about a historic cemetery and found this lady. I am always interested in the women who went up the ranks from prostitute to madam to one of the richest women in town, like Madam Dufran in Deadwood SD. Well meet Leannah Loveall She had the same career path as Dufran and something amuses me about a prostitute named Loveall. If I wrote that people would be annoyed at me being clever.
Also I'm reading a book with the tag line Klimt, Freud and Jung meet the bride of Frankenstein (Anima Rising) it's not what I was hoping for (I have a love/hate relationship with professional RPF usually falling on the hate side) but it mentioned Felix Salten, the author of Bambi, is now considered the probable author of Josephine Mutzenbacher or The Story of a Viennese Whore, as Told by Herself , a famous early erotic novel (not one I've read and I've oddly read a lot of these things, none of which that were very good IMO)
So my brother calls me yesterday to tell me it's my turn to rent a cabin in the Hocking Hills (he did it last year for the group) and he has the perfect one for me to rent because I love caves. He said he'll kick in 100$. It's 1600/night....dream on, bro but man, it's something. Check it out
I am a bit tired so I'm pushing off my fannish 50 women of fandom til friday. Instead I'm going to fall back on a fannish 50 standard for me: the fan animatics.
Satana came out with a new one for Hazbin a few weeks ago (but YT just recced it to me) and they have another one to the song ricochet by starset. The new one is to Paranoid DJ's fan songs for Hazbin. I've recced their work before. This song Get Hooked is not my favorite by them but I love that DJ experiments with style. This one has a mumble rap feel which is what I don't like because the lyrics are very hard to hear over the unbalanced instrumental but the animatic is pretty amazing. Satana does not make Angel smooth around the bend like a Ken doll like so many fan artists do. He's decidedly male.
Warning BOTH animatics have Angel Dust in his drug-addicted, sex worker role (including pole dance/stripping) and the allusion to sexual assault is very apparent. His and Val's relationship is a toxic abusive mess. This doesn't shy away from that. (Honestly as prudish as YT is getting i'm surprised they haven't been hidden)

Another day that got away from me
Jun. 9th, 2025 11:06 pmMostly wrote and then had a surprise writers zoom meeting because I forgot we weren't doing them thursdays any more due to conflicts in half our schedules. I didn't do well but mostly because some fool lost the link to the big bad Pennsylvanian cryptid she wanted to use. Sigh. I could NOT find it again. I found the others I wanted to use as red herrings.
Still having blood sugar issues. Today's breakfast sent it almost to 400. By lunch I hit a critical low and then I knocked my damn monitor off again.
two hours later the monitor covers arrived from Amazon. In ONE day. I'm so not used to that (even Prime will not guarantee 1-2 shipping in my area).
Also in there was a book I ordered on Italian healing herbal meds and folklore/paganism. I've been testing herbs from other people's culture and looking so long at UK/Viking paganism because all I could find on Italy was Raven Grimassi who I did not like. I'm excited for this.
Let's share our music! It's music monday. I'm still doing the alphabet challenge and I'm up to J. I'm only doing the last 5 years but you can share whatever. This was not a good letter so I'm not even cutting it because there are so few. Also YT was on fire with recs today. Lately it's been doing nothing but AI music which is a no (even if it's fan tracks. I'll listen to it if the fan wrote the lyrics but otherwise not so much) I have several new bands to follow.
