Getting this started

cornerofmadnessGiving in to the inevitable, I ended up signing up for this thing. I had to do it for certain classes and I resented it. Then there are those friends who keep insisting on it, as if we can’t be friends any more if I don’t take the leap. If I want to participate in the latest ficathons in fandom, it’s required. Don’t even get me started on how infuriated those latter two make me, getting forced into something is never a pleasant experience. There are a lot of reasons I don’t care for journaling period. I dislike online journaling even more because of the nigh voyeuristic qualities one has to possess to be reading someone else’s journal. The psychology magazines are now stuffed with studies detailing the social introversion, isolation and social withdrawal live journals and chat rooms are causing. We’re getting more and more unwell.
When I think about ‘time bandits’ (I so hate that self-help seminar sounding term) I would have to rate a live journal right on up there at the top of the list. I listen to friends talking about how many hours they’ve spent reading people’s journals, bemoaning the lost time when they had other things to be doing. You can practically see them being cut off from the real world, lost somewhere inside this little on-line community. I don’t need this happening to me. I have enough things stealing my precious time away.
So don’t expect me to do a lot of journaling here. You might see an odd topic tossed out from time to time. Feel free to comment on it. You’ll see links to stories for these ficathons here. Not the stories. I don’t take the time putting them up at all the wonderful archives out there and I don’t waste Chris’ time to put them up at our site just so I can slap them haphazardly here. This is a mere tool to accomplish something that a year ago wasn’t necessary to do. Time moves on, things change and I guess I have to go with it.
People are excited I’m doing this. I can’t imagine why. What do they imagine is going to change? I’m not coming to this thing often. If you want to contact me, you know my email, use it. I’m not getting into private conversations on an open forum. If I toss out a topic here, feel free to comment on it here. If you have something else to say, best send it direct to me because if it comes here, it will be pointedly ignored.
I know this isn’t a very welcoming journal entry. It’s not meant to be. Look at my profile. It’s equally unwelcoming. There’s no personal details about me. If my website wasn’t called Geek Girls I wouldn’t even have specified my gender. You pay attention to forensic news and you see how journals like this open you up to being a victim. You tell the predators out there all about yourself. What you do, when you do it who you do it with. Am I being paranoid? Maybe. Better that than the alternative.
So, you found yourself here, roaming around in my corner of madness. Did I send you here to look at something? If yes, by all means poke about, see what I have to say. If not, you need to ask yourself, why am I here? And if you are my friend and you find yourself just stumbling along here in this journal do me a favor. Take the time you would have spent here and go outside. Enjoy nature. Go for a walk. Plant a tree. Go to a poetry recital. Listen to a jazz band. Get out there and live a little. It’ll be far more rewarding than sitting in front of a screen and listening to me rant.
Of course if you do come back, maybe the next journal entry will be happier. Then again I’m not known as melancholy for nothing.

There are still ways to maintain the privacy here (friends only stuff, filters, comment screening and such), so LJ doesn't really expose you if you don't want to.
