Summary He doesn’t understand it
Author’s Note My first venture into this fandom.
Soul couldn’t work his head around the look on Maka’s face whenever she saw his scar. How could she be surprised that he got hurt? He was a weapon, after all. He was bound to get nicked up. What he doesn’t tell her is that even he finds it a little hard to look at the scar arching over his chest and belly.
Even more shocking to him is how weird Maka starts acting afterward. She’s not herself. Hell, it’s like she’s trying to be him. He eventually figures out she’s trying to make herself stronger, but she just doesn’t get it. The weapon protects the Meister, not the other way around. She’s stronger than she knows.
But the true surprise came to both of them when he seared Maka’s hands in battle. The idea that something was seriously wrong between them cut straight to the bone.

Summary She doesn’t understand it
Author’s Note My first venture into this fandom. Also the ease at which Stein is accepted sort of bugged me
The rattling of the wheels sounded familiar, but Maka couldn’t really place them until the task chair slammed against the threshold, spilling their new professor onto the floor. Surprised didn’t even begin to cover it. How could they have let a lunatic like Stein teach their class? It didn’t matter that he was supposed to be a genius Meister. Maka wasn’t sure she trusted that scarred face. What kind of man drives a bolt straight through his own head, after all?
Maka knew Lord Death wouldn’t have put Stein in this position if he thought the doctor would hurt the students but she still had her doubts. Her mind wandered from the lecture, thinking about her father, which admittedly wasn’t that common for her. Stein admitted to experimenting on her father, his own weapon. That sounded sick, absolutely horrible. How could Stein do that to the man he was supposed to trust implicitly, to have his soul resonate with? How could he cut her father up and do things to him in his sleep? Was the way her father acted a result of something Stein had done to him or was he just a horny jerk from birth? Maka didn’t know which she preferred. Either way, she planned on keeping a close eye on Stein.

Summary He can feel the madness
Author’s Note I find Stein disturbingly easy to write and here I was saying I wouldn’t be doing much for this fandom…
X X X
“I’ve already demonstrated how your brain perceives what your eyes see. Vision is more than the capturing of light, but since they won’t let me crack open a skull to show you where the brain interprets vision.” Stein pouted. “I am going to have you truly examine how your eyes work. If you don’t understand that, you can’t understand visual perception and if you can’t do that, then how do you know if you can trust your eyes in a fight? Put your scalpels aside and watch me.”
“These aren’t from something endangered, are they?” Maka glared at the dissecting tray in front of her and Soul and the eye stared up blindly.
“Cow. Now just watch first, do second. Insert the scalpel in the sclera to make the initial incision then use your scissors to complete the incision.” Stein showed them, removing and identifying the pieces. Some of the vitreous humor splashed onto his arm and rolled into his glove as he explained what it did. A couple students gagged. Ignoring it, he held up the lens. “This is what refracts the light.”
For a moment, Stein thought he saw his reflection in the lens, distorted, evil. Damn, the madness was moving extremely fast. Soon, he wouldn’t be able to teach. Soon, he would dissect them all. He’d start with the dumb ones and work his way up to the juiciest bits.
“Professor Stein?”
Stein turned his screw, trying to pull himself together. The madness wouldn’t get him without a fight. Looking at his students, it took great effort to return to the lecture. A soft, wicked laugh escaped him and he flung a scalpel at Black Star who was chattering. “As I was saying…”
Author’s Note #2 – the vitreous humor stuff happened to me today when I was doing this same lecture but I refrained from whipping scalpels at those text messaging while I’m teaching.

Summary All his worst fears concerned his daughter.
Author’s Note so much for I don’t need a new fandom…
XXX
There were things Spirit had always taken for granted. That his daughter loved him was definitely one of them. Sometimes it was hard for him to look at the vibrant young woman she had become and see Maka for who she was, a meister following in her mother’s footsteps. To him, she would always be daddy’s little girl, dancing on his feet with him; the bright-eyed child begging for him to read her another story.
Spirit knew she was angry with him right now, that she blamed him for the divorce. It was his fault, of course. He couldn’t say why he was the way he was. Maybe he had become a father too young, only seventeen when Maka was conceived. He still had wild oats to sow or maybe he was just fundamentally damaged, doomed to chase women.
He understood her anger, admitted she had a right to it, even though it hurt. But standing there in Lord Death’s meeting room, defending Death’s decision to re-imprison Crona, Spirit hadn’t been prepared for Maka to lash out at him. Her hot words seared him and the world narrowed, silenced as all eyes turned to him. An extremely uncomfortable thought squirmed into Spirit’s mind, leaving a sticky trail behind it. Something in Spirit’s soul tore and bled. What if Maka wasn’t just angry at him? What if his only child actually, honestly hated him?
