I have to have my shoulder operated on. It wasn't my subscapularis (like the idiot tech reported), it's supraspinatus tenosynovitis which makes much more sense but that's just a symptom of a much larger problem. I have a hypertrophied AC joint. This is the acromioclavicular joint.

WHat happens is the joint becomes arthritic and the ligament gets bound down squashing the tendon and nerves. I told him I've been having pain over that joint for a decade. I said I sought help in FL and was told it was the arthritis in my neck (which yes, I do have). Even then I thought that was ridiculous and was told then to get a lap top because it was more ergonomic than my desk top (I asked HOW since the desk top I can look directly at my screen without having to bend my neck). [livejournal.com profile] evil_little_dog can tell you about all that ranting.

He put in another steriod shot and said this is also a diagnostic test. I should only be able to get 1/2 cc of fluid into a normal healthy joint. He put it in and said 'bad news. all 10 cc's when into that joint. It's enormously swollen.' Well I'll buy that. It hurts. I can't even get my own shirts and jackets on any more.

So I need to have a Mumford procedure done (yes this contains surgical images). He told me it was a 100 y.o. procedure developed in England for their rugby players since they're the ones who get this most often. I'm not sure how long the recovery period is yet. I'll research it. We're giving it a few weeks to see if the shot calms it down but that only works 10% of the time. It feels good now because it's jacked up on local anaesthetics but i can move my arm above my head without pain. Yeah, say goodbye to the distal part of my clavicle. Maybe I won't miss it.

I'm so exasperated with so many of my LJ pals having to have medical procedures over the past year! But I'm glad it is something curable so you can have relief from the pain in time.

yeah I need hand surgery too I'm not too put off by it. If it takes away this pain, cut as much as my clavicle off as you need

thanks

Ouch! But great that it's treatable. Apparently it's normally done as an outpatient procedure, so at least you won't have to deal with hospital food?

*attempts to look on bright side*
So if you need to schedule time off for this, could you potentially have your hand surgery in the same block of time off?

my only worry is they'll have to give me general anaesthesia which usually means a day in the hospital vomiting.

Sadly no. Mom asked that then thought 'wait, it's on the shoulder opposite the bad hand right? If it is, you can't do both. I'm not feeding you when you don't have a good arm left.'

Thanks mom. It would leave me without a good hand and I'm less worried about feeding myself than not having one hand I can use to wipe up.

Surgeries always stress me out. I'm sending you lots of good thoughts.

Also questions cause I'm curious. Once the surgery is done and the recovery period is over should you have less pain there? And also I was curious if you would be able to raise your arm without pain or meds or anything as well?

thank you

some of those questions I need to go over with him once i do more research but since the goal is less pain I'm certainly hoping that post-op I'll be able to move my shoulder without much pain. I'm sure i'll have to go back to PT though

well shit! I hope this clears the pain up a bit (or entirely) for you! It's nice to have a doctor who seems to know what they're talking about. Too bad it means surgery, though.

yeah I figured it would be surgery. He gave me the name knowing I was a surgeon too probably figuring I'd go research it and yeah well...

thanks

That sucks. That sounds awful. I hope the op will help though and you'll gain better mobility, and less pain. Good luck.

I hope the end result is no more pain.

I can't believe the incompetence of the original doctor.

frankly he was old. I said that at the time. He was old and mostly a gatekeeper, moving the surgeries in and everyone else out. He should have just injected it then to calm it down

well, guess that answers my question earlier about your shoulder. Ouch. All things considered you sound okish about having the surgery....hopefully will provide much needed pain relief....

fingers crossed (mentally kicks old doctor in the shins)
