what are we considering me as a child? Probably the first three series I loved in grade school were Nancy Drew, The Dana Girls and Trixie Belden, i.e. girl detectives. I loved those books, especially Nancy.

By my tween/ early teen years I was onto Agatha Christi and Nagio Marsh, Lord of the Rings, Andre Norton's witch world and a whole host of others, like the Dragonriders of Pern and all the Star Trek inspired novels.

Why? I loved a good mystery and was fascinated by other worlds

I preferred the Harper's Hall books to the Dragonrider books, basically because I hated Lessa, F'lar and most of that ilk. I think the only character I actually liked was Brekke, though I did like Moreta, too, she seemed a lot more approachable. I also liked Nerilka....

i did start with the harper Hall series which I completely forgot about until you mentioned then. I rather liked F'Lar i think but honestly i can't even remember the names any more.

Lessa was the snappish Gold Queen rider, F'lar was the Bronze rider who was Lessa's husband. F'nor (he of the awful name) was F'lar's brother, and rode the largest Brown dragon, and Brekke was the healer who also had a gold dragon who went between during a mating flight.

...I can't believe I remember all that. Jaxom, of course, had the white dragon, Ruth. I liked Jaxom more than any of the other dragonriders, really, at least of his generation.

Lessa also had wild hair that couldn't be tamed and was always staticky or something. At least that was the impression I got of her. She really did nothing to impress me, even if she was the heroine of the first novel.

Servant girl, but supposed to be the heir to whatever clan she was in.

I've never been a regular mystery writer, and yet I've discovered over the years that I also love a good mystery. I should have known: as a kid I loved the Encyclopedia Brown and Three Investigators series.

I do write mysteries (and they aren't easy omg they aren't easy) but yes I think out of all the series for juveniles back in our day the best were the mystery ones

But, they sure aren't easy! Looking back, I realized many of my previous stories had some element of mystery in them, but the YA mystery I just finished was a bear. Inserting clues, being careful of red herrings, not being too obvious, making sure there are enough suspects and twists -- and all the while still following all the other rules of good writing -- wow, it's got to be one of the toughest genres to write.

Can't wait to try it again!

no argument. I'm trying to turn that erotica novella into a novel because I'm fairly sure an epublisher will take it but damn those red herrings
