the title says it all. OUCH. give me a hill and I have to climb it. give me stairs and I have to see where they go.

Day three started way way too early. I had to be up at 6 to catch the bus at 7. Kudos to Sam's Deli. The breakfast sandwich of egg, cheese and ham on a croissant was delicious (I even liked the ham and I don't particularly like ham). We went to Camosun College and their welcome in their brand new First Nations Gathering Place was outstanding. Those who know me well know I have an affinity of First Nations/Native American cultures. I've been a reservation doctor. I've been on the Pow Wow circle more than once with various boyfriends. To have the hereditary chief of one of the Song Yee clans welcome us and his son and two nephews dance for us was just outstanding. I don't like taking pictures of dancers without permission (it's considered poor etiquette) but I made an exception (I also have some video of it as well but I might not diddle with that until I'm home if I even have the video. I can't make it show up on the netbook but it might not have the software).

Bear with me as I go over the classwork for my own references. I went to the using the NCLEX in the A&P class (and I'm going to use this to beat D to death, and all her opposing of pathophysiology. A huge chunk of the NCLEX IS pathophysiology), teaching muscloskeletal system via touch, using clickers in class (so doing this) and using student models.

At lunch, I met the author of Becoming Batman a book that takes a physiologic look at training to be as good as Batman. He has phd's in kinesthology and neuroscience and is a black belt so I'm looking forward to reading that. Then they offered a walk to a panoramic view. It's a little hill. It's a little hill in the way I'm just a little less than slim. It was a 3 mile round trip up the side of a freaking mountain. Yes it was all sidewalk but my god, that hill. We decided no one bikes this thing and lives. I would have no idea how to break. Anyhow the view, once I managed to get there was beautiful and worth the hike up. Spent it with a Romania prof who teaches at the Uni of Arizona (thanks for hanging back with me Claudia).

On the way back they took us on the scenic tour complete with tour guide. Also I didn't get their names but a big boo hiss to the two jackasses two seats behind me who kept talking ALL the way back right over the tour guide despite how many of us shushed them (as if we would put up with this from our students. Is because he's a bus driver he's not worth listening to?). You can skip this paragraph if you want but I'm writing down his info in case I want it for a story later.

Vancouver Island is 300 road miles long and 60 road miles wide. Victoria is the third most expensive city in Canada (no shit), one block from Camosun college begins the Uplands, a 1400 sq ft home starts at 800K, most houses 1.5 mil-25 mil. All the electrical/telephone lines are buried in the old gas lines tunnels so not to ruin the view and the old gas lanterns are in place. Up next was Oak Bay right on the water and just as expensive. It moved on to Ross bay and up until recently whole logs washed up on the road and Ross cemetery's 'paupers' area would wash out (the old bus driver remembers kids finding skulls on the beach), Ross Bay had old homes from the 1800's, mostly wealthy Brits and gold mine owners who didn't want to live near the miners closer into town. From Ross Bay you can look out over the water and the next land mass you'll see (as if you could) would be Japan.

The last things we saw was Beacon Hill Park and Helmbach house and Thunderbird Park. Beacon Hill is lovely and next to the Beacon Hill sign is a crumpled piece of steel from the keel of Mr. Stanley (as in Stanley cup Stanley) where he ran aground in the Harbor. Helmbach house adjoins Thunderbird Park which are both just outside the Royal BC museum. Helmbach is the first doctor in Victoria. Thunderbird Park has a bunch of totem poles.

In spite of all my walking, I hiked up to Beacon Hill Park since it was only a few blocks up the hill from my hotel. THIS is what I want, a beautiful place like this to walk. It was filled with rhododendrons and azaleas (which are in such beautiful bloom because it's a month behind season, very cool and rainy but that also means the sniffles from the pollen). There were ponds with herons (nesting), geese and duck. Natural rocky areas with natural paths. I could have hiked around this for hours. I did run across the same two panhandlers who approached me the night before last so I went back a different path.

One of the other HAPS members told me about the Old Spaghetti Factory which she said was good and cheap and turns out to be behind the hotel (the one place I hadn't explored yet). I had a weird feel going into the place, like a flash of swimming then learned that the Crystal Garden that this is in was an indoor pool back in the day, the largest salt water pool in the British Empire. It was supposed to be a short wait but a party of 30 (26 kids btw 9-11 years old) stayed an hour over estimate so the wait was forever but it was CHEAP. Certainly cheaper than spaghetti chains in the States. There were at least 3 dishes I really wanted and a dozen others I'd happily eat. AND all entrees came with minestrone or salad, a loaf of sourdough bread and garlic butter, tea/coffee and spumoni and nothing more expensive than 15 dollars. I got a pasta they claimed Homer ate all the time (I'm a little doubtful it was browned butter like this but butter and cheese, sure) Browned butter and Mizithra cheese and a huge portion. I have enough for lunch. Yes, this is definitely worth it and yes I'll probably eat at least one or more meals here. And just as I was finishing up, I feel someone run a hand along my butt cheek. I thought a waitress or the people behind me bumped me. I turned and no one was there. (and how ironic, I was reading a ghost hunting book at the time).

But since it ran late, I didn't get to go for my swim and I think I walked my feet off. ELD and Silvrethorn can probably tell you I'm not a relax on the beach/lie about doing nothing vacationer. You usually need a vacation from my vacations. I will not even have to take another picture all year for my photo a day meme since I've dozens already. Digital cameras are the best thing in photography in forever.

Oooo!

I was laughing that Yuuki told you to go to that place, then someone else did, on your trip. It sounds yummy.

WHOO to the Native Americans greeting you and dancing.

You had an eventful day! Think of all the exercise you got and all the calories you burned! Can't wait to see pics of Beacon Hill Park. It sounds like a lovely walking place.

You stay in a gorgeous hotel, see beautiful gardens, and have cute guys dance for you. Unfair, it is.

I hope you took lots of pictures of the park. I want to see that.

There's an Old Spaghetti Factory a few blocks from here. I think it's a Western chain. I've been eating there since I was a kid. :D

Sounds like the stay is MORE than making up for the problems getting there! You might be glad of the walking, what with, you know, all the spaghetti. :)

(Now I want to go to the Old Spaghetti Factory. They make my favorite white clam sauce in the entire universe.)

might be western

I'm guessing it's western-- I actually think it started out of San Francisco, but I'm not positive.

Really GOOD clam sauce -- actually white, not just clams in garlic butter. It's better than alfredo.

I love The Old Spaghetti Factory. :) We had one in San Diego and the one in Los Angeles where we ate after an audition when I was a kid was AMAZING. (No, I didn't get the gig... it was an old Goodson Toddman game show where kids described something and adults had to guess what that something was. They'd recruit at my private school.)

That is SO SO SO cool about the "swimming flash" and ghost goose.

Have fun!

I love the photo. It's a really nice shot. I'm highly amused though that there has to be an "EXIT" sign way up there on the pillar between what clearly appear to be two very wide open exits. I don't really think a sign is needed.

it is a nice shot. yeah, public gathering place that barely has walls and still you need that sign
