I survived. In spite of two narcotics the pain is great but there is good news. The supraspinatus muscle wasn’t torn and they did not resect my collar bone (I don’t even want to know how much more it would have hurt). They did however have to move my long head of my biceps to a new home close to my armpit. They removed one very messed up bursa from my acromioclavicular joint and they burred off the arthritic spurs.

Timing is everything and we did not have it. There was an accident and my surgeon was delayed 3 hours. Luckily I had a book with me in pre-op. knowing i was a doc they treated me nicely and hey used my title and everything. The anesthesiologist put in a nerve block which entails a very long skinny needle and ultrasound to find the nerves. He said I’ll give you versed and you won’t remember this. I remember them turning my head and then I was in post-op four hours later.

I was fine all night except for a sore throat since they used general as well. Nausea was bad since I don’t do general. I felt ok around 9. If we had been on time I could have gone home but we weren’t. mom slept in a reclining chair in my rrom. The overnight stay wasn’t bad. The doc came at 6 (this is what I hated as surgeon rounds) said I could go home. Orders didn’t get done until 1. I was pissed.

By then my nerve block was gone and I was in PAIN. So they tripled my oxycodone and I had a reaction. I became flushed diaphoretic and vomited so I had to stay another four hours mostly because they had one freaking nurse and no one wrote for an anti-nausea drug and my doc is going to hear about that. I told him I needed it.

Got home at 8 pm. Still in my hospital gown. I am not allowed in a shower for 5 days. I’m in the sling for at least 2 weeks but since it wasn’t as bad as they feared I start therapy on Friday for @ 2 months. I’m still dizzy, nauseous and sleepy. Typing one handed is hard. I’ll talk to you all later. soul is finally coming to mom. kanda is love biting her

YEAH you're home! Since I happen to know that medics (doctors, nurses, paramedics) make the worst patients (we get very impatient) I want you to keep chanting this mantra over the next couple of months of therapy and recovery: SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE.

And remember we love you. Now to start finding good jokes to send you.

I’m so glad you’re home! I didn’t expect to hear from you yet, I know how much surgery can take it out of you, so you’ve done well to make a post so soon afterwards. Take care of yourself, and try not to do too much – let mum help, okay?

Yay, you're all fixed! PT for two months sure beats the hell out of PT for six months, and having your bicep in your armpit beats a resected collar bone. And good riddance to the ruined bursa.

I came home from the library today to find a note from my mother saying she had gone to the ER. Looks like I may soon have hospital stories of my own to post.

You did get your nausea meds eventually, right? No way can you live through the next week without your Oxy (and hey, if you don't need all your Oxy you can sell it on the street for $$$. Prices are high in Ohio, so I hear. Painkillers sell cheap here in FL, since we're the nation's black-market supplier :P.)

My goodness! I've been so off in my own little world, between my own health issues (I just went through a whole round of heart tests, and am now going through an even more invasive round with the gastro guy) I haven't been keeping up with the "family/good friends" part of my f-list, which I really hate, so all kinds of stuff has been going on that I have missed out on. I had NO idea you were getting surgery, kiddo!

What exactly was the diagnosis the surgery was for? Did you have an accident, or an injury, or - like me (I'll explain) was it long-term wear and tear? I can definitely sympathize with what you are going through - I've had three open rotator cuff repair surgeries (no, I don't have three shoulders, one needed repair about 18 months later, and now 8 yrs. later they both need to be redone!) So, yeah- narcotics, PT, slings, painpainpain... been there, done that, bought the t-shirt. Although, I will say, I think whatever your issue was, it must have been something beyond mine - while I had a lot of bone grinding and hacking to get rid of the spurs that were grinding up the cuffs & tendons, they never mentioned anything about needing to resect collarbones. Sheesh, girl! Whatever you did that led to this, don't do it anymore!

What I can say - to give ya a little hope - is that in the same period I had the 3 shoulder ops, I also had 4 other surgeries (7, count 'em, 7 in 2 years, folks) and as recoveries went, the shoulders really weren't that bad. The PT is heinous the first few days, but it gets better quickly, and passes quickly. The worst part was having to go three or four times a week, and not being able to drive myself - not being able to drive, in general, was a pain, especially once I started feeling better.

Hang in there, dear! I am going to msg you my email address. If you ever want to email - now or ever - feel free. And no worrys about the ficcie, it will be there. Take care of yourself, and just relax! ♥♥♥

Glad things went relatively well for you. I was concerned, of course. Glad to hear it wasn't as evil as it could have been. Take care and post when possible. Don't worry about not meeting up next week. I will probably take a vacation later in the year and head down your way to see my folks... and possibly swing up to Columbus to the zoo.
