Doing research like a real author
Aug. 18th, 2011 10:20 pmI went to Old Economy Village where I've set the demon hunter story. It's a half hour from here (Lucky Uncle's wife grew up in the area) but I've never been there. It was a nice reclaimed village. It was founded by George Rapp a Lutheran separatist who left Germany and settled in Harmony PA with abuot 800 followers in the early 1800's. They were very industrious and successful in business (mostly textiles) and moved out to New Harmony IN but since Indiana sucked along the Wabash's flooding shores, they decided malaria wasn't for them and moved to Economy. They were among other things, sort of communist in that they gave all wordly possessions to the church and in turn were cared for the rest of their lives (though they DID care for them well, building all the elderly additions to their homes so they no longer had to climb stairs).
However, they also believed that Rapp was a prophetic and Jesus would return in Rapp's lifetime (oh well) and celibacy was strongly encouraged which eventually led to a split in the Society and their eventual demise. The Harmonists were in their time however, wildly successful and influential. Rapp's house was a big chunk of the tour and I do have pictures using the new (i.e. dad's) camera but right now the computer doesn't think the SD card is in it so you'llbe seeing those later in the week and probably for the rest of 5 weeks of this picture meme.
They took us through the whole village, the gardens, the meditative grotto, the grapevines and various places like the feast hall, the granary (now a museum), the general store, a few more typical Harmonist houses (many of which are still private residences), the stables and the smithy, and the museum that the harmonists actually had. They have a b unch of cool things I won't get to do since I won't be in the area. I enjoyed it.
Things I learned that I've not heard of /seen before: A flax spinner.I knew they existed naturally but hadn't seen one. A Hastener which was a metal shield with a vertical pole behind it. You slapped the meat on the pole, set it in front of the kitchen fireplace and turned a clockwork spring and voila, a rotiessiere. That the reason to grow grapes ON your house was to a) keep the house cooler in the summber b) the reflected heat increased the sugar content in the grapes
I think I'll wait until I have pictures to tell you the role Von Hohenheim played in the creation of this town (I'm not even kidding)
Speaking of demon hunters. I'm almost done. Working on a 'missing' scene and the last sex scene. Now not only will Temple not tell me who tops, he won't tell me if they go to the bed room or do it under the Christmas tree/on his aquamarine couch

and this is what you see
