Writerly Ways
Jun. 3rd, 2012 05:16 pmOkay so yesterday I corrected mom when she said it was sunday. I knew it was saturday when I was planning to watch Deadman Wonderland and Casshern Sins and yet when I sat down here I thought it was sunday and I had missed my writerly ways.
Not that I have much to say anyhow but how about this theme? Titles? Or OMG I HATE titles. There's a title for you. I know some people love them and have them before they even start a story but those people are insane (looks at
evil_little_dog. Most of my titles are lame or stolen from song lyrics or poems or something. I don't know why I hate them so much but I do.
So why am I ranting about this now? I DID start camp nano with my Vampires in Vegas story. And right now that's its title. I can not keep calling it Vampires in Vegas (but that shall forever be its tag because who knows I probably have more than one story for Luc and Arri).
Here's the synopsis. Arrigo is an ancient vampire, currently living in the Sky apartments right on the Vegas strip so yes, rich, bored, a member of the Chiaroscuro a group of supernaturals and magic users who police their kind for the evil-doers. He sees a displaced Cajun, Luc and falls in lust with him. Luc and his nasty father and brother moved to Vegas to work for a friend of his father's post Katerina.(mostly because with Poppy Brite, Anne Rice and Charlaine Harris, Louisiana doesn't need another vampire story). Luc is uneducated and pretty much trapped by his family who pretty much equate women, minorities and gays as punching bags. Luc is extremely conflicted by his bisexuality, brought up to think he's more or less going to hell just for thinking about it.
Enter Eleni, a caput lupinum, wolf's head as far as the Chiaroscuro is concerned. Some time in the past her and her lover ran afoul of the Chiaroscuro and Arrigo and they killed her lover. She decides it's time to prick at his sides again and sets her sights on Luc thinking he means more to Arrigo than he currently does.
So yeah, it needs a title. I'm open to suggestions and readers!
You know what I'm going to do when I come back from Wales? I'm hopefully going to see the Bryn Celli Ddu burial chamber and it's near the town of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwll-llantysiliogogogoch. I'm not even joking. I'll set a story there and it's title will be It Happened One Night in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwll-llantysiliogogogoch.
Yearly word count -
44809 / 75000 words. 60% done!
I edited everything but Ties that Binds. I've made progress on the Scarred Soldier story which really does need someone to read it all the way thru shortly. Started two other stories besides the vampires, Sacrifice - a lesbian fantasy and Nine's story, m/m novel/novella/who knows.

Date: 2012-06-03 09:43 pm (UTC)This is all fine and good when you have the luxury of choosing the title when you are closed to finishing the writing. But when someone expects a title upfront? OMG, forget it.
I am struggling with this right now because I am putting up my writer's website that will be a platform for the book series I want to write but only am on the first draft of the first book of. To promote the series, I need to give it a name, the "brand" if you will.
Upfront.
This is driving me crazy.

For that matter i really need to work on the tag line for

Date: 2012-06-04 12:39 am (UTC)Granted, my CYA story doesn't have a title. "Ed's an Ass" doesn't work.

Date: 2012-06-04 03:07 pm (UTC)I remembered it. And stuck it in the title block for my story. Mwahahhaa.

Date: 2012-06-04 01:01 am (UTC)Ugh making titles drive me nuts. I have various ways of approaching creating titles. Lately I'm choosing synonyms of the main idea/concept/symbol. Other times I'm tempted to use a metaphor, or highlight some nuance or seeming small item that has a lot of significance.
Hmm, I have an idea. If you could design the cover of this book with only a max of three items, what 3 items would you pick that relate to the main conflict of the characters in your story? I can suggest something once I have a better idea of these three items?

Date: 2012-06-04 02:30 am (UTC)Casshern Sins is a little dulll.
Titles are so hard. I like your idea.
Hmmm a cover for this. it would probably be cheesy. The Vegas strip, the gay couple and a female vampire, that would be the three things

Date: 2012-06-04 02:38 am (UTC)I don't like Casshern Sins either.
Ok, what is the relationship like between Arrigo, Luc, and Eleni?

Date: 2012-06-04 03:13 am (UTC)I hope Casshern picks up a bit. Right now i'm not that interested in it
Okay let's see, Arrigo is looking for a new fuck buddy and finds poor conflicted Luc. Luc wants to go with him but doesn't really trust him since Arrigo is educated and wealthy and Luc is the exact opposite.
Eleni wants Arrigo dead. Arrigo has been tasked with dealing with Eleni as she is a problem. Eleni offers Luc a chance to prove to his homophobic relatives that he's not gay and he goes out with her not knowing she's about to turn him into a vampire to use against Arrigo

Date: 2012-06-04 03:11 pm (UTC)i usually hope the title reflects the book. Other times i flop around like a landed fish and give it one in deseperation that probably smells like fish.
good luck to you

Date: 2012-06-04 08:57 am (UTC)Hmmm, actually I was thinking that Luc was pretty important to Arrigo too....

Date: 2012-06-04 03:03 pm (UTC)Luc will become important to Arrigo but in the beginning he was just looking for sex.
