Happy Birthday to my grandma. She's 97 today. My family, you need garlic, holy water and a stake or two to take us out.

I just learned that next year, my convention will be at the Mirage. Mom says you are NOT staying there. But Mom it'll be cheaper. THe Luxor is 40$ you go there.

Can someone explain THIS to me? WHy in the world is the hospital bill going to the lifeguard who rescued a 12 year old boy and NOT the boy's family? Yeah great people have donated to pay it but WHY is this even necessary. If I were to drive a student to the hospital would someone bill me? I'm confused.

I'm debating even pushing back til saturday. I WISH I could go for my fun on Sunday because it's going to be cooler but that's not really possible. Gah, it's going to be so hot tomorrow and saturday. Bet I get sick.

Random: how much does it annoy me to see people review on goodreads based on cover or author name alone without READING the book? Um what?

The internet died at work today. Sigh. Had to run home and go do laundry and now I am very tired so I'll shut up.

ETA - I forgot my photo challenge picture. The prompt is 'one,' so here is a solitary bonsai, my weeping barbados cherry the day I brought it home from the Franklin Conservancy.

My guess is the lifeguard signed the paperwork to admit the kid, who might've been unconscious, and said paperwork went to billing, and the lifeguard got billed.

Your mom is making me laugh. You know she'll meet you there and go gambling the entire time.

that's my guess too but i guess my point is why, once that snafu was brought up did they not just bill the parents.

oh mom is already planning that (which I suppose is why we're staying in the cheap hotel)

Because his name is on the paperwork so he's liable for the bills.

I'm sure she is. I don't blame her.

If the convention is giving you good rates for the Mirage, I'd stay there. The Mirage is like a million times nicer overall (the rooms, the casino, etc.) plus, the Luxor is clear down at the other end of the Strip, about a mile each way, which is certainly doable but a pain if you're going to be at a convention.

If you need someplace cheaper, go to the Imperial Palace -- it's right across the street from the Mirage and usually has super cheap rates.

Mom says you can walk it (notice she doesn't include herself). I've walked it before but I wasn 't hauling 100 pounds of text books they thrust on you at these cons.

If I don't stay there i'll stay closer probably. I'll keep the imperial palace in mind. thanks

As I said, you CAN walk it - and if the convention is in the winter, it can be a lovely walk. But you'd be, I'm guessing, making it every day, morning and evening, as you note, lugging a lot of stuff. And it's possible to take the tram to Excalibur, cross to MGM, take the monorail up to Imperial Palace/Harrahs, and cross there -- but that's still a lot of walking.

it's memorial day and I still don't want to walk it. However if the mirage is well over 100$ I know I can get very close buy for a lot less

Very, very true. There used to be $49 a night deals at Imperial Palace, though - and all the rooms have balconies! I haven't priced them recently, though.

apparently mom has something against the IMperial Palace and countered with Harrods (nice rooms, ugly casino).

then we signed up for the mirage and the rooms can be as low as 90$ so...it'll depend on the con cost for the hotel (i can get the school to pay for some of it)

From: [identity profile] wildrider.livejournal.com
Harrah's, you mean? (Otherwise, I don't know Harrod's).

Yeah, a lot of people seem to dislike the Imperial Palace -- it is convoluted, but I liked it as a hotel. It sucked for a convention.

The Mirage is beautiful. There's a reason it's Sean Patrick's favorite. :)

Date: 2012-08-04 03:11 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
duh, yes, Harrah's

I don't think I was ever in the IMperial Palace so I can't judge

I've liked what I've seen of the Mirage. Actually I'd like to stay at the Venetian but that ain't happening

Date: 2012-08-04 03:35 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wildrider.livejournal.com
Yeah, the Venetian is amazing, but since it's not MGM/Mirage we've never stayed there. (Mom's a Gold Card holder.)

yeah I figured your mom might have comps or something.

My uncle used to be friends with one of the higher ups at the mirage but he moved on.

With Mom I stay at the MGM, Mirage, and Bellagio... when it was me and Barb, Imperial Palace. :)

ooo Bellagio and god the MGM is SO big.

From: [identity profile] wildrider.livejournal.com
The Bellagio is my favorite -- best rooms, best pool, best spa, everything. LOVE it. MGM is nice-- once you've stayed there a few times, it doesn't seem quite so big. I know my way around there pretty well now, even with the changes.

Date: 2012-08-05 05:13 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
good to know.

About my whole MGM experience other than to look at the lions was walking thru it to get to the monorail and it's like will i EVER be done walking?

Date: 2012-08-05 11:06 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wildrider.livejournal.com
Yeah, that was the first time I walked through MGM -- now I know the fast way to get there and it seems like it takes no time at all. But it's like that going through any of the hotels on the monorail route, really, to get back out to the street.

Date: 2012-08-06 01:28 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
that is also true but for some reason MGM seemed bigger than the rest. It didn't help that I'd get side tracked windowshopping

Date: 2012-08-06 03:53 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wildrider.livejournal.com
Yeah, it is spread out, for sure. I believe it's the largest hotel-wise (a cabbie told us that once), too.

Happy bday to your granny!! That's awesome she's 97!!

Sweet! I've stayed in the Mirage!! It's a really nice hotel. :D I've also stayed in the Luxor & if I had my choice, Mirage wins every time! :D the Winn is also nice, but a bit pricey. ^^;

That is kinda sick, but maybe he signed the paperwork for the kid to get seen to?

my family is long lived.

Mirage is certainly nicer than the Luxor but the Luxor is a pyramid....seriously though if the Mirage is too much even at con pricing then I'll look close by.

that's what I'm thinking but once it's explained he's NOT a legal guardian shouldn't it roll over to the parents I mean if I had been the one working on the kid that's what I would have done

Awesomeness! :D

But you won't necessarily get the pyramid room. When we stayed there, we actually wound up with a suit in the extra building behind the pyramid. It wasn't a bad room, but the Mirage is cool, you got the tigers & dolphins & the pirates at the TI next door, the volcano at the Mirage, then there's the free water show at the Winn, you can walk to the Bellagio (sp?) & see the dancing water which is cool! The while strip seems to be really hopping down the Mirage's end. The spice market buffet in Planet Hollywood is good & if like the Beatles, they have a good show/dinner combo thing. ;p The Cirque shows are also good. And during the day if you don't want to gamble, the mall's pretty good too & further down is the Pawn shop they shoot Pawn Stars in. ;p kira's been to Vegas a few times. :D

From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
tell me about it. I reserved the pyramid and got the tower. I was disappointed about that.

I think they might have done away with the pirates sadly and didn't much like the Winn but I DO like the Bellagio and teh Venetian (a cousin works there).

I would like to see another Cirque show and I did have fun at the renn thing at the Excalibur (I've also been to Vegas a bit)

I would like to see Freemont which I've not seen.

Honestly I'll spend FOUR days in a freaking convention room while my mother has fun. I think if we were smart, i'd go first and then she can join me once my con is over (I hope to present at the con)

*nods* The suite was nice, but it wasn't a pyramid room. >.>

I liked the Winn. I've never stayed at the Venetian, but it looks really nice from what I've seen. :D That's cool your cousin works there! :D

The Bellagio was nice! We had a water view so any time we were in the room, we'd try to catch it form there.

*nods* I've been to Medieval Times on a school field trip. It was awesome! :D

You sooo need to go to Freemont Street! I love the stuff on the ceiling! It's really cool! :D

That sucks! You should be out doing things! :D Yeah! that would be much better! (I hope you get to present to make it all worth it!)

I can't remember why i didn't like the Winn (but I suspect it has more to do with teh owner than the place but I'm so senile that's all I remember).

I can't afford the Venetian, last I looked it was like 300/night. technically he's my aunt (by marriage)'s grandson but he's like one of the few people from her family I like.

I do need to go there especially since that's where I put the vampire bar in my Vampires in Vegas story.

I don't mind the con but yeah it gets expensive. I might start alternating con one year, work shop the next (they're 2days each) that way I'm not in a hotel for a week because even though the school pays for the official time they don't pay ALL and it's pricey.

Last year it was Victoria, BC and that about broke the bank.

Okay. XD

o.0 WOW! Even with a deal I don't think I could stay there either. XD He's still a cousin. :D

Cool! :D

Yeah... and that can get tiring too.

WoW! I've only been to Montreal, but I believe I have some rellies that live there. Just have only seen them when they come here. I know I have rellies in Toronto too. :D

Date: 2012-08-03 05:15 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
yeah it's like omg WHY so much? (yes he is in the same sense as the one who passed this week)

cons are definitely draining. (that said I'm already signing up for the Mirage's mailing list!)

Up until then I had only been in Montreal and Toronto (years ago and no rellies). Victoria was beautiful but it is on par with NYC and London for expense

Yeah! (awe...)

*giggles* yeah? XD

I haven't been to Toronto, but I'd like to go. I liked Montreal, granted I was little when I went, but still, it was nice & I had a good time. :D Yeah? We were going to go to London this year, but decided not to cuz of the Olympics. And next year's cruise has been planned out already, so hopefully I'll make it to London in '14. I also want to tour a bit in Europe too. I especially want to see Italy. :D

Date: 2012-08-03 08:00 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
yeah

I was little when I was in Eastern Canada. I hit London for 2 days this year a month before the Olympics and the affects were already felt.

I would love to go to Italy. that's where the family is from

Cool! I'll bet! I've always wanted to go to there & Europe, but never made it over there yet. We do have family over there on both sides & it would be nice to see them. :D

Sweet! I want to go as my grandparents have been a few times & from what I've seen in the pix they took, it's gorgeous! Plus I want to get real gelato! ;p

The report I read yesterday was a bit more detailed. The lifeguard went to the hospital in the ambulance too because he had a headache after the rescue, so the bill was for his own transportation and treatment at the hospital. My question is, why the hell was the ambulance cost so fucking high? Did he get charged for the entire bill? I'm glad someone else is paying the bill for him, because no good deed should cost someone $3,000.

Also, happy birthday to your grandma.
