I was wondering that throughout new student convocation which is pretty much exactly like graduation minus the long parade of people getting their diplomas (i.e. march in, prayer, president speaks, speaker speaks, choir sings, pray again for some reason and march out). THe faculty miss out on classes so we're not amused. The freshmen are BORED. Seriously bored. You can see it in their body language (and their incessent texting) so who is this really for? I can't figure it out. It seems like pomp and circumstance that no one really wants/needs and I don't see it doing what they say it will 'creating a community' for the students.

Other than that I am crabby. As in So VERY crabby. crabby+ eating everything in sight = watch my period come a week early just in time for my yearly...

Convocation seems to be an American thing. Morgan's own was held duing her FOUR FLIPPING DAYS of Orientation. Parents were invited -- it was held on Day One. My experience suggests this is mostly for the parents to see/hear/sing/learn the school's fight sing ad nauseum. Oh, and first non-tuition request for moolah aka peripheral fundraising.

I did see lots of texting, but freshmen still geeked about starting college. Coincided here with campus move-in.

see that would make more sense. they put ours on founders day about 3 years ago. That means we're a month into this. No parents are invited and I think that mostly the kids who will do well are vaguely interested and the rest not so much My school has a huge amount of students who literally have no business being in college. Almost have are in h.s. freshman english or math and 25% are so poor that even that's too hard...

Minus generating money for an institution of higher education it "should" be for the students.

Right now they are too fucking ignorant to even "get it". Fill up a piggy bank if you feel bad for them.

I'm mingling with the "unwashed". I feel dirty enough that I smoke cigarettes. These ass hats deserve any due they are due. (for real.) If it wasn't uncouth I'd hand out Darwin Awards right now... and they'd gladly accept them.)

I sit back "blithely " with mostly vets and old people. Mostly I think, "No way!"

this is non-money generating so yes should be for the students who look at it, I think as a relic and a waste of time.
