Writerly Ways

I’ve been a bit too busy to do a writerly ways in the past few weeks. I still am at this point but I wanted to talk about endings. I find this to be one of the hardest parts for me. I’m sure I’ve mentioned that before. Ending means saying goodbye and in real life I’m good at that but not so much in my stories (I don’t even want to know what that means). Oh sure, if it’s a series it’s not really goodbye but who knows if it’s a series or not. I sometimes do, I sometimes don’t.

Take the scarred soldier story. Would I like to do another story with them? Absolutely. Do I currently have an idea for a second story? Absolutely not. So it could be goodbye for good and I’m finding myself balking. I have literally 11K more to make it over the goal but I’m struggling. Part of it is sheer lack of time but the rest is this ‘I don’t want to let them go.’

Of course, if I don’t, no one but me and a few beta readers will have ever seen this story and that would be a shame. I think it’s a good one. I also need to look up minimum donations Wounded Warriors accepts, as I’d like to donate part of my royalties to them should this sell. Now I would never have thought of that if not for my author’s list. Some of them have tried doing the same with GLBT and cancer or abuse charities only to find out the donation requirements are more than the percentage would be and it’s nothing but a hassle then. (how sad).

Speaking of my beta readers, would you like to see the first @50K now and get the ending as I get it done or would you like to just wait until I get it done (and maybe hold my lazy feet to the fire)?

I’m of two minds with this one. On one hand, wouldn’t it be nice to get 200,000 page views (provided of course I ever get my damn website done) but on the other hand using a thing that is more or less a spambot bothers me. I know a lot of companies do it. Lord knows if I mention something by name on Twitter, I get followed by that company the next day but in some ways that’s very annoying.

I'd really like to see the whole thing, if you're willing to wait. I'd get a better sense of how it all fits, that way. Wow, you've written a lot!
