“It’s traditional, you know,” Roy protested, trying his best puppy eyes on Riza.
She thrust the rag and bucket of vinegar-water at him. “Oh, I know. Tradition or not, it was your idea to go through with it. You get to clean the mess.”
Roy accepted the cleaning supplies reluctantly. He’d much rather use the Elric-patented lazy man’s way of using clap alchemy, but he couldn’t with Riza watching him. She didn’t like him abusing his power. She said it set a bad example. He said it showed how to be resourceful. He lost that battle.
He set them on the table, which was covered with butter cream and crumbs of cake as was the floor and pretty much every available space within a two meter radius of the table. Hayate and Spitfire were busy cleaning the floor with avid tongues. Roy slipped an arm around Riza’s waist, guiding her out of the room. He could always come back, use his alchemy and sprinkle some vinegar water around to make it look good.
He walked her into the living room where their one year old daughter, Rue, sat in her play pen stacking blocks. She took great glee in knocking the tower down once it was built. Her walnut hair was streaked liberally with icing and her entire face was still sticky, but Riza had wiped it off. It had been a mask of cake.
“Every kid should get the privilege of eating their first birthday cake by themselves,” he said still inwardly grimacing about the fact his daughter chose to dive face first into it. He wasn’t quite sure how she managed to breathe during the adventure. The one highlight was her slapping some of the cake right into Edward’s face when he and Winry brought their brood to town to help celebrate. Roy was pretty sure he had a picture of that.
“I didn’t disagree.” Riza patted his chest. “And you can wash her, too, when you’re done in the kitchen.” She jabbed a finger back the way they came.
Roy sighed and headed back. He was just about to clap when he felt Riza’s eyes on him. He picked up the bucket. “Cleaning, see?”
“I see. Now is probably not the time, looking at this giant mess, to tell you that I’m pregnant again,” Riza said.
The bucket hit the floor. The dogs didn’t seem to mind licking up a little vinegar water either, goofy beasts. For his part, Roy was too stunned to do anything but grin like an idiot.
