Hey I'm hosting another author on my blog. come meet Nicole Forcine
And
origfic_bingo is open for another round. It's a great way to stimulate the muse and it's low pressure
Sometimes the faculty union isn't a safe place to be. We need to learn to treat people better. I do like our new chair's way of handling things (like a stern mom with her errant, idiot children). I wish some of more active people hadn't decided they aren't doing anything this year. Honestly, I could see it because of family obligations but there is the whole 'punishing us' feel to it. Whatever. I have enough problems of my own.
Remember Aunt S2 who lost her twin over Christmas in 2011? Her mom is dying. She was doing fine but the cancer took hold in a major way and in less than three months she should be gone by the end of the week. Needless to say Aunt S2 isn't doing well but partly it's her own fault. She had a spotty work record, jumping for low paying job to another, ignoring better paying more stable ones because it wasn't what she wanted to do and now she has very very little money in her senior years and her mom and her mom's sisters inherited the house from their mother, never bought one or the other out so her aunts plan on selling the house out from under her (which she knew was coming but has done nothing all this time to make other plans). And naturally she's dumping all this on my mom. Sigh.
Apropos of nothing, can I ask you all a question? (besides this one). I was writing something I had started for one publishing house's anthology and it's ballooned well past that. I was still thinking of sending it to them (the whole let's not put all our eggs in one basket, or publishing house) anyhow. However, they do publish some things I'm not comfortable with. On the plus side, I hear they're wonderful to work with and I've enjoyed stories I've bought from them (and a few of you have worked with them). That said, while I have no problems with fanficcers doing incest (I mean I have Dean/Sam, Ed/Al and other shippers on my list), and I've read manga with that idea (looking at you Saiyuki I'm hugely uncomfortable with it.
I've dealt with people who were victims of incest. Granted most of them were non-consensual (and the books they publish with the incest them are consensual). I have listened to the horrible affects incest has had on them and have done since I was really quite young. I will never forget this older study back when I was an undergraduate, somewhere around 87 or 88. Non-trads were rare then so she would have stuck out anyhow but often it was only me and her in the computer room late night. I was there writing a novel on the school's Apple IIe, you know the ones with the REAL floppy disks, the big ones? She was writing, too. However she was writing her memoirs. She was a many times over victim of incest, first her father who then encouraged her brother to pile on. Then came the drugs/alcohol and a husband who believed wives couldn't say no and held her down and made her son rape her. I can't imagine living thru this. She was working at a battered woman's shelter and sometimes I'd go with her. I'll never know why she decided to tell an 18/19 year old girl this, maybe as warning, maybe I looked like someone she could talk to.
I find nothing sexy about incest. I don't really care if fan ficcers take their fiction that way. Apparently I do have an issue with it being published, not for the horror of it, but for the sexy of it. So finally to my question, would you have an issue with a publisher that puts out volumes like this (they are limited run since many places wouldn't carry them)? Or would you rather no associate with it? I'm not going to judge your answer either way. I'm mostly just curious. I think I already know what my own answer would be.
And to switch gears again, I LOVE this tea. mischief tea, Loki blend. Okay I'm not sure gunpowder/tiger eye/ginger = chaos god but it's a sight better than mint and/or marigold petals that others want to include. And can we just agree no hero/villain wants to be rooibos? The tiger eye is sweet with notes of caramel and chocolate. THe gunpowder is smoky and the ginger is a hint of heat on the finish. YUM. (i.e. yes my 2 pounds of tea arrived and a) it wasn't raining on it & b) my neighbors didn't steal the box)
ETA _ I forgot to wish a L'shanah Tova to my Jewish friends! apples and honey all around.
I quite love this song

43. Again, both. I like fluff on its own but I think if pressed I have to say I like it wrapped into other things to give a fuller, more complex story

Date: 2013-09-05 03:15 am (UTC)Your Aunt S2 in some ways reminds me of my cousin. She worked for a cheap-ass local business man who never gave her health insurance or a pension (even though he had money out the ass), and she never bothered to put any money away for herself, even though she lived with her parents her entire life until they died. Never married, and when her parents died, she sold the house she had gotten from them, but had to use the money to pay off debts. Now she's trying to live on SSI Disability. And she's not a stupid woman! It's just frustrating that she never planned for her future.

Date: 2013-09-05 03:39 am (UTC)Yep that sounds familiar. S2's twin tried to get her to work with her for Hertz rental. Not glamorous but S1 loved it. she met a lot of stars that way, believe it or not. health insurance, pension etc etc. S2 wouldn't. sigh.

Date: 2013-09-05 03:20 am (UTC)I guess I figure that most publishers are going to carry some material I disagree with, find unpleasant or offensive. I was reading a book of short stories from Tor just recently and stumbled unexpectedly into vore. VORE!!! In fanfic we have content advisories for this! Here it was just right there in an otherwise ordinary-looking sci-fi story. I've backbuttoned out of book previews at basically every major M/M publisher because of misogyny or other do-not-wants. For that matter, I was bothered in the beginning at the idea of being published through a publisher that carries only M/M (as opposed to stories from the rest of the GLBT spectrum), but the M/M publisher I've been working with have been INCREDIBLY nice and professional, and I've been very happy with them.
So yeah, I don't think it makes a difference to me unless the publisher goes out of their way to brand themselves in a way I can't deal with (for example, I haven't submitted any of my sci-fi stories to Orson Scott Card's online magazine; I just don't want to be published there). But as a general rule, unless the publishers are being dicks about it, I don't feel that their other content reflects on my own. I don't think others are wrong for choosing differently, however.

Date: 2013-09-05 03:47 am (UTC)And yes you do have something published with them. Like I said, I've heard nothing but good when it comes to working with them.
And it's also very valid that one book doesn't brand the whole group (though they are one of the few publishers who publish that stuff). And 98% of their stuff isn't that (though for me they have several squickie anthologies and the real kick to the head is that 2 novels CAME from those anthologies but I didn't hold to the intent of the anthology. The novel DSP is putting out was for their Scar anthology but I went with DSP for other reasons. I'm not sure if you're on the original fiction filter but the Behind Blue Eyes, SF dystopia was for the dubious consent which even though I occasionally write it isn't that okay by me. But the whole idea of consent became the focus. I might still pitch this to them if I ever get it done)
And you know that is a good point about m/m only publishing. I had similar thought and just a few years ago when I started this, no one wanted LGBT themed erotica but ones specifically for that (and now Harlequin has a line...) I AM bothered by some themes in a lot of the stories too, like misogyny.
And this is why I have issues with a lot of Yaoi in general. Too much rape me, I love you. Yuck.
Oddly enough the story I'm really thinking of pitching to them is in the het line

Date: 2013-09-05 05:15 am (UTC)I don't know if I could answer you about the publishing question since I've never been published. ^^; Fictional incest of the kind that appears in fanfics doesn't bother me. I know it's not real & in fiction one can play with taboos that one can't in real life. I've written some myself, but real life incest would. It was only years after the fact, but I had recently found out that a good friend I had in middle school had a grandfather who was molesting her. Now that I know that it does explain a lot, like how she hated her mother, possibly because she wasn't believed that her father was being inappropriate with her daughter, how I was ALWAYS asked to sleep over with her when she was staying with her grandparents (which I always thought was cuz we were good friends & I lived near them) as a chaperone of sorts & how she was sooo happy when her grandfather passed. ^^; I now wonder how I never caught on, but since she never said anything, who would think of those things? Knowing that, incest in real life would bother me, but I know that the pharaohs married close relatives & they're viewed with the same horror one would have if one found out the neighbors were doing it. ^^;My Bosses first cousins married, which was frowned upon, but accepted by the family. And then I have relatives that came from small shtetls in Europe, which I'm sure after a few generations, it was hard to find someone not related to you. So in a certain time & place, no batted an eyelash at it, while others did at the same time found it just as nasty as we do now. To get back to that poor woman you knew, that was just unthinkable... that poor woman. How many other people are out there that are suffering in silence?
Anyway...

Date: 2013-09-05 03:10 pm (UTC)But it was par for the course for Egyptian pharoahs. They married their sisters. We're doing mitochondrial DNA studies now to observe the affects of that.
let's see
10. Favorite trope - the abused boy (gee, I'm right back to that incestuous rape) Most of my characters have had some kind of abuse or childhood tragedy and it's just a little bit sick that's my favorite trope
15. not at all with the caveat the emotion meets the story around it. I don't like it if they cry at the drop of a hat and I don't like overly weepy men. Now I don't hold to the men don't cry thing because they do but culturally they cry less
23. Incest, mpreg, character bashing (especially to justify the author's own non-canon ship) and characters being written totally OOC.

Date: 2013-09-10 12:21 am (UTC)*nods* Yeah... I know, I think some cousin, that I haven't met as the family's like scattered all over the world, had a Tay-Sachs baby. I remember overhearing my Granny tell my Mom that once. It's got to be hard, cuz the poor babies don't do well. T.T
*nods* yeah? I'd love to know what they come up with.
*giggles* Yeah? XD It must be something you're comfortable writing.
Okay. I don't think I'd like an overly emotional guy in a fic, unless it's either played for laughs, or his character is a crybaby. Kinda like Shu-chan form Gravitation. ;p
*nods* Yeah, I hear you on those, and add bad grammar to the pile. I don't like correcting the stuff as I'm reading, cuz it's distracting. ^^;

Date: 2013-09-05 09:28 am (UTC)and RE: incest literature. I can take it in small amounts under two conditions. 1. it is shown as the violation, life long horror that it is for the victims or 2. it is only shown as "sexy" when it happens accidently and with some genetic distance ("I didn't know she was my half sister/first cousin/etc"). hey, I got off on blue lagoon a little bit with everyone else. that shit was hot. but a father having sex with his 10 yr old daughter (even with her shown as liking it) is just wrong. for several reasons. victims are confused and guilt ridden enough. what was done to them was a violation. showing violation sex with children as sexy feeds a very sick market, I would imagine. it also tells kids their violators are right - that they should like it. all just very, very wrong.
as a species, who are we? sick rutting fucks or thoughtful, intelligent beings? history may judge us by our literature.

Date: 2013-09-05 03:13 pm (UTC)I've written it as #1 many times. #2, in erotica it is often closely related (hell in high school I DID write it sexy between identical twin brothers so I've always been kinda fucked up and so really what IS my problem with it being published?)
But nothing with kids (unless it's #1 and told as a history and it's done the way it should be). To be fair what I'm talking about is definitely not with kids

Date: 2013-09-06 09:30 am (UTC)and, yeah, it's so different when it is an adult coercing a child (or much older kid, like a teenager with a 6 yr old or something like that). it should never be shown as ok. but, if told as a traumatic past or cautionary tale it can work (maybe even help) as long as it is never shown as ok or consenting or written too graphic.

Date: 2013-09-06 04:18 pm (UTC)I don't think anyone would publish anything pedophilic (there is a constant background noise of making that illegal). Fanficcers have done it and I avoid that like the plague

Yum to the tea.
I'm kind of on the fence regarding the incest publication. A part of me squicks up, but another part of me says, 'fantasy/romance incest is just that, fantasy/romance.' Then again, promoting something that could be so devastating...and yet, a good publishing house. So, yeah, I'd have to think really long, really hard about it.
Poor Aunt2. Poor your Mom.
That's an interesting song.

I choose 13, 31 and 38.

Date: 2013-09-05 06:52 pm (UTC)31. I'm not a huge fan of AU's. And I don't mean we go in and change one thing so a character doesn't die or something. I'm all for that. I mean when we change the world like in the Buffy fandom writing it with no vampires for example. I'm not interested in that very much. I tend to avoid that type of story unless a friend wrote it and wants me to read it.
38. I'm not into gender bending much. It doesn't interest me usually. I wrote it once (I think literally in 400 stories I wrote it just once) due to magic (poor femme!Spike). Now if the character is canonically a gender bender well then that is fine by me (and I am considering working on a character who is gender creative) De-aging, I'm assuming they mean magically making a character 20 years younger and every thing else stays the same as opposed to going back 20 actual years. I'm fine with the latter but the former holds no interest for me. Animalization again, no interest. I'm not sure I've ever written that.
