Unlike a lot of my friends, I'm very apprehensive about the new Doctor. While I think Peter Capaldi is a fine actor, my Doctor has always been young. I'm really not looking forward to old skool Doctor because I didn't like the old Dr. Who.

I'm definitely a fan of the reboot. I have tried so many times. I just don't like it. I tried hard last year with the revisit with each and every one of them and I still didn't connect. I'm reading this book and it's teaching me a lot (I find it a good read filled with all sort of production gems but I'm not sure if there is anything new in it for the old-time fan). I've gotten a new point of view on the daleks and cybermen (and I'm still tired to death of them, sorry) and understand their importance to the fandom more.

That said, I'm not sure I want a cantankerous old man (granted Capaldi isn't THAT old). I'm used to a level of energy and insanity (not that he might not bring that too).

I am, however, more than ready for the end of the flirtation between the Doctor and his companion. I hate the Rose/10 thing. And Clara does diddly for me (other than thinking, gosh, she's cute).

I'm trying not to prejudge things and yes, I will be watching it tomorrow. Mom, on the other hand is prejudging (If I wanted to look at an old man, I'd look at your father!)

Interesting because they call it a reboot on all the shows about it. Moffat called it that quite a bit. To me it doesn't really matter what it's called, I didn't like anything prior to 9

yeah the romance went nowhere for me. Then again I disliked Rose so much I stopped watching 9 and the early part of 10

well yes that's true but reboot is the new word of the decade for restarting shows so...

See I greatly preferred 9's clothing to a ridiculous scarf or god knows what was going on in the 80s there. Though 9 wasn't really a favorite for me. I preferred 10 and 11. I didn't mind the dramatic speeches.

I do wish they would have done more with the idea of his family other than the odd hints and him ducking the question (10 & 11).

Rose sucked. In the beginning I didn't get the station it was on nor had netflix since I was just beginning to work again after 4 years of being reschooled afte rmy injury and had no cash. I didn't know she was only supposed to be 19. I might have been more lenient because teens make dumb ass choices but probably no, I'd still have hated her. I wish she wasn't the one to always come back. I liked Martha. A lot.

I like Who, but I'm not an Uber Fan. I have enjoyed the new show/reboot/whatever, but I did love Baker & Davidson's Whos back in the 70s when I watched the show on PBS.

I'll have to download the series when it pops up because I don't get BBC America, but I also need to watch last year's Christmas Special first. Haven't gotten around to it yet.

I guess I'm not an uber fan either but I enjoy it. I did try to get into Baker way back when on PBS because all my closest geek friends loved it but I just couldn't get into it.

ugh that sucks because BBC America actually has some really decent programing

The thing is Doctor Who has never been about the guy playing the lead - it's about, to quote Craig Ferguson, "the triumph of love and intellect over brute force and cynicism." Until Smith was cast, the youngest man to play the Doctor was Peter Davison -- several years younger than Tennant and MUCH younger than Eccelston (who was 41 when he was cast). The newer episodes aren't about a young guy playing the part -- it's about the Doctor traveling through Time and Space.

I understand not being interested in the older show -- it took the new show to get me there -- I watched it some when I was in college because, like you, all my friends did, but I never really became a fan until the new show... and then suddenly I understood the old one, and began to love it. I started watching them on Netflix and... well... it worked for me. I got it.

By the end of Tennant's run I HATED him (and I'd been quite the fangirl); and I adored Smith not because he was young, but because he GOT IT. He knew how to play the role. The Doctor might have his regrets and sorrows, but when it came to living life, he LOVED it. He loved it all. Emo!Doctor overstayed his welcome. (He was good again when he came back for the 50th.)

My trepidation comes only because I loved Smith's performance so very much. Quite possibly by the end of the episode tonight all those trepidations will be gone.

Because no matter "who" is playing him, he's the Doctor.

Anyway, I know arguing doesn't change anyone's mind. I just hope you enjoy it some. :)

I like Ferguson's quote a lot actually.

I really have tried going back to the old stuff now that I like the new and I'm still not connecting sadly.

Honestly I have to agree that at the end Tennant's Doctor was too emo and he was pretty much MY doctor (him and Matt who I love equally to be honest).

I hope my trepidations will be gone. Mom plans on calling me so we can discuss as it goes (since she doesn't live tweet). I'm certainly going to watch.

I still want to know why Davidson's Doctor wore celery on his lapel. They referenced it on the Doctor revisited but never said why

The oddities of each Doctor's outfits never came up in the classic show (until Doctor Six... and LORD have mercy... but Peri had to be right at least once!) -- Three ran around in velvet coats and opera capes and Four had his scarf and NOT ONCE was it remarked upon on any planet or in any time -- but 11's bow tie, yee gods.

So celery? WHO knows? (I think I've seen all of Five's serials, and I can't remember it ever coming up in the actual run of the show, but I may have missed something.)

hahaha. I know they made a few comments about Ten's suits and yes the bow tie that Amy hated so much.

But I really DO want to know why celery (or how high the Doc was in the 80s with that outfit. Clown eyes were bleeding).

Capaldi seems to be harking back to the opera capes

Well, Doctor Six was noted as having had a very bad regeneration (seriously, Colin Baker wanted a dark outfit, but they told him if he wore black "it would make people confuse him with the Master." In all honesty, the Beeb was trying to kill the show so they did everything they could to make it suck).

They've been showing "Insider" bits between episodes here today, and said that Capaldi was looking for an outfit that could be copied easily by anyone -- he was, fanboy that he is, thinking about cosplay!

Oh I believe they were trying to kill the show in the 80s

Aw that's sweet of him.

Since I've only seen the first season of 9, and only images of everything else, I can't say much of anything. But I'm still amused you're watching Doctor Who.
