I think I'm more paw paw than woman at this point. One of my coworkers brought a bunch in to give away and no one wanted them but me. YUM. I know a lot of you probably never had one because it rots quickly and looks like a bruised ugly green potato to begin with so it's not usually in stores. I can get them at farmer markets (and plan to go to the paw paw fest next week). I ate so many paw paws today.

So I recleaned the living room convinced I had my check book on the couch. On the upside the room is clean. On the down side, I took off ALL the couch pillows and flipped it. Nothing under it but holy crap my arm hurts.

So I decided to poke through the book bags that I didn't empty and what not. Apparently I hallucinated it being on the couch. The check book was still in the camera bag where I put it so it wouldn't get lost back home. Head desk.

One of my coworkers brought in this!! Spock with the Horta and he talks. I'm SO thrilled to know this exists. Mom's birthday gift is done. I should get it tomorrow when I have to go down to Gallipolis for a presentation on the holy wells and sacred springs of Wales. RI had it and she asked you know what this is, right? I said it's the horta from The Devil in the Dark and TH, the organic chem prof and fellow geek looked at me and said, 'you're SUCH a nerd, you know that right?'

Yes, yes I DO.

In fact I have an older student who always wears (well the 5 times I've seen him) superhero t-shirts and I complimented him on them and he's as stunned as I am that we're now accepted as almost cool.

And one of my students is a DJ at the local station I love. Cool!!

And TH gave me this link. We both love Weird Al.

ETA - I saw my first "Christmas" commercial today. K-Mart. Oh it makes a huge deal of NOT being a Christmas commercial and is rather a 'birthday one' (with elves and reindeer running about). In a way I can't blame them since it's for their lay away which needs time but on the other hand, September folks!

declutter day 243 item tossed -XXXholic #1 why kept -Wanted to read it why tossed -Purging my collection and again, I'm just not into CLAMP.

Is it completely wrong I want Al's clothes in the beginning of the video?

I really want to try paw paws.

The Spock-Horta ornament is amazing.

YES IT IS. I will think of you what Roy is thinking of Maes in my story.

they can get a tad bitter around the skin but the inside is sweet and custardy. They grow in your neck of the woods.

IT IS. I must have it

It's a GREAT outfit! Look at all the paisleys!!!!

I know they grow down here, but I've never seen any. I wouldn't even know what the trees? Plants? Would look like to try scouting for harvest. I think Mom had some when she was younger, we talked about it before, but I'm not sure.

It's a great ornament. If I did trees, I'd probably want one.

paisley is rarely a good idea

i'd stick it on the shelf

Paisley is always a good idea. Lots of them. Strangely colored, mitochondrial-looking things.

Hmm, I think I've seen the fruit in the grocery store under another name. I wish one of the local farmer's markets carried it, though!

A shelf would be good.

they are that

I would be surprised if they were since they rot so fast ask around at the farmers market. I've found them in the back and not put out because a) they look like hell b) most people don't like them or know that they might

They were heavily refrigerated.

I'll ask if we get back to the farmer's market. They're only going to be around the next week, and they'll be closing up. Most of them just have typical garden stuff.

that might do it.

Ah you know that's surprising of a place as big as where you live. Athens is SO much smaller and ours runs year round, moving inside and doing things like breads meats and cheeses and jams/salsas in the winter months

I'd be thrilled if they did that, believe me. There are a couple of actual farmers who do, but the markets close down.

Yeah, Mayes and Engelbrecht's both stay open year round.

I need to get season2 & 3

As I tell my students, this is why we have scientific names. If we knew that, then we'd know for sure but it is tropical so it's possible

Cool! I got them on Amazon & I think it was a special bundle. I'd love to get DS9 (all seasons) as I really liked that one too. :D

Yup!

I have to go to Florida to go to them. We do have a Barnes & Noble up here, but I never really liked them enough to deal with the hassle of going there. I preferred Borders, which was close by. It was a sad day when they closed.

Borders was my favorite.

Aw that's too bad you don't have a half price near you. I looked, nope and all the PA ones are in Pittsburgh but almost everywhere I've lived has them. Madison WI, Columbus OH, PIttsburgh PA, I'm lucky

*nods* It's a shame they had to go.

Yeah... You are LUCKY! :D I think I saw a Books A Million at the outlets.... but I could be wrong. It wasn't a big store either & not really worth the drive to get there. So as part of my visiting my Granny, we go to the bookstore. :D

Did the pawpaws have seeds? If so, did you keep any? I'm looking to grow pawpaws, because zebra swallowtail caterpillars eat them. The fruits would be a bonus if I could get them before the local raccoon discovered them. If you tossed the seeds, see if you can get more from the Pawpaw Fest. I won't be getting native pawpaw plants unless I go out in the woods and dig some up, so might as well go for the cultivated kind. I don't think the caterpillars care about the variety as long as it's in the Asimina family.

I'm glad to hear you found your checkbook. Losing checks is scary. People can use them, and crooks draining your bank account is the last thing you need.

I have seeds. When dry enough I shall send some. I'm not sure how well they grow from seeds and I have no idea what variety it is but we can try.

exactly. I would have just put a stop on the three checks left in that book but still that costs time and money

From: [identity profile] silvrethorn.livejournal.com
Standard eating pawpaw is Asimina Triloba, so that's probably what you have seeds from. I'd much rather have the native dwarf pawpaw, but unless I go hiking into the Ocala National Forest bearing a digging spade and trying not to look shifty, I'm not going to get one. I probably couldn't tell a dwarf pawpaw from the regular kind, anyway. The leaves pretty much look alike. The seeds have to be chilled in the fridge for three months so they think they went through a winter, and apparently they take six months or so to germinate, but they can be grown from seed.

And now that I say that, digging one up is looking better and better. Unfortunately, they have taproots and do not transplant well :(.

From: [identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com
they are also clonal so you might end up with a clone that isn't viable away from the parent.

Actually here we have about 6 eating varieties that I tried to keep straight when I harvested the seeds. Guess I better jam the seeds into the fridge now then. But these do look like your standard one
