No matter what he tried, he couldn’t make his father happy; either of them. Connor knew he wasn’t the son either man wanted, though they pretended otherwise. Everything he did was wrong. Holtz wrapped his criticisms up in the idea that he was so harsh because Connor had to be ‘hard’ to survive Quor-toth – true enough – and harder and stronger still to take on Angel when they managed to get back to Earth.
Angel didn’t seem to know what to do with him. Obviously Connor hadn’t grown up to be the son Angel dreamed about, planned for. Of course he hadn’t. Angel never expected his son to have grown up in hell. What hurt Connor was Angel – and that went for his friends too – never adapted to Connor’s reality. Instead of accepting him as he was, they were angry and disappointed he didn’t fit their preconceived notions of the man he should have been.
Even when Angel rewrote him, it wasn’t into a life Connor would have chosen for himself. At least his fake father seemed to understand him but why wouldn’t he? The magic assured it.
Now at the end of the world, Connor was going back to help the father who never understood him. He didn’t know why but maybe, for once, Angel would agree Connor was doing the right thing.
