Tenaldi’s heart thundered. Surely he hadn’t heard a moan from inside the passage grave but the sound had moved him into the mouth of the tomb. There, the sounded echoed up again. Tenaldi knew it was probably not the smartest thing he had ever done but he shoved his lantern out in front of him, and slowly made his way down the slick, stone passage.
He was the queen’s green healer, a gardener of herbs and poisons, not her guardsman. He had no weapons, not even one of his poisons. Tenaldi’s foot scuffed a loose stone and the moans stopped. Tenaldi tensed, realizing there had to be someone inside the tomb. His hand shook, splashing light all over the passage. An ancient carved face startled him. Tenaldi knew he should turn back but he didn’t.
In the center of the tomb, near a thick symbolic pole huddled a young man. The scent of blood hung heavy in the room. A sheathed sword rested near his hand. He inched his fingers toward it, his eyes on Tenaldi.
Tenaldi held up one hand. “I’m not going to hurt you. You look hurt already. Is there anything I can do to help you?”
“I’m beyond all help,” the young man said breathlessly. He pulled his hand away from the sword.
”Let me try. I’m Tenaldi.” He set the lantern down. The injured man didn’t flinch away as Tenaldi tried to examine him. The blood came from a head wound. Tenaldi probed the injury making the man moan. “I’m sorry. The skull feels whole but this might need stitching. What happened to you? Who are you?”
”They called me Resmad once,” he replied, that confused breathless tone, making it sound more like a question. “So long ago. Names mean nothing.”
Tenaldi frowned. Maybe he had a concussion. That would explain his confused speech. “Do you think you can stand? I can take you back and fix you up.”
”They’re chasing me.”
Tenaldi looked over his shoulder, half expecting death to be there. He turned back to Resmad. “You’re in the queen’s garden. No one is here. I’m not sure how you’re here.”
”Went over a fence. That is nothing for one of the Lady’s chosen,” Resmad said, struggling to sit up. His face paled.
Tenaldi could see that fact even in the poor light. Resmad seemed even younger than Tenaldi first thought, handsome but the eyes were old, haunted. There was a story there. “We need to get out of here, just in case. Let me help you.”
Tenaldi looped one arm around Resmad then scooped up the lantern. He let Resmad carry that as they staggered out of the tomb.
As he turned the injured man toward the castle, Tenaldi wondered what he had gotten himself into.
