Writerly Ways
Jan. 31st, 2016 05:42 pmCan I talk a little bit about ridiculous damage done to your character = sexy times?
Yes, I know this grows out of the whole hurt/comfort thing. I'm also willing to accept insane amounts of damage being done in an action picture since that is part of that genre but in general, not so much.
Far too many times I've read a scene where one of the would be lovers are hurt, badly and that leads up to a hurt comfort scene where we have sex. Am I the only one who finds this unbelievable? I mean, I wouldn't want to have sex if I had a headache, let alone cracked ribs.
And yet yesterday, I've seen an attempted sex scene where one character has a gash in his face and a broken wrist (unset except by the teenaged girlfriend) and one accomplished sex scene with broken ribs. In fact, I've seen the latter multiple times. I can only come to the conclusion the author AND editors have never had hurt ribs. Let me tell you that is not conducive to sex. I don't find this level of hurt/comfort believable or satisfying. Let's not even get into the times I've seen it with sword slashes and gun shot wounds.
I think this goes to my post the other week or two about believe ability. I want to present the most believable story I can. I want to read the same. I can suspend my belief for some things but having broken boned sex isn't one of them, I guess. The broken wrist one nearly went flying across the room because not only did we have that we had the same young man in school and his teacher knowing it was child abuse does nothing but hand him a card and says call me. That's technically illegal. It's like did no one at all check into how schools have to respond to these things (then again this same book had the same young man break another kid's arm and wasn't even expelled...).
Here's this from ELD
I like it.
ANd from Chuck Wendig which was timely since I plan on doing this. pros and cons of going to pro cons I am as of right now going to Aminmazement (or something like that) anime con in Raliegh NC in May with some other DSP authors. I won't be on panels or anything but I WILL be in the dealers room with books. If anyone wants to join me (I think one long term Elfquest fandom friend I had never met will be there and if so I would like to pay her to take pro pics of me as Jana) do so.
I'm also considering going to the Rainbow con in Tampa which is specifically for LGBT centered stuff. The pros - completely right audience (which you might not have at the anime con) the cons - Florida in July. I mean seriously, Florida in fucking July. Why not just dose myself in flammables and light a match? If I DO go to that one I would probably consider going to Orlando (from Tampa) for a day just to go to Diagon Alley. But damn, July....
I still haven't written enough to put up a word count
Anyone here want to get a slow chapter by chapter YA (not LGBT) urban fantasy set in Madison (
wildrider you've read it all already)? I DO want to get out of the LGBT only rut I'm in. Yes it's a nice rut but I want more.
And I saw this picture of Pond's Tampons
sonjajade put up and tracked it down. opium soaked tampons
I have to use this somewhere.
All right back to bacterial growth media and the crafting of another instrument of test-based torture. Sadly the bacteria seem to have gotten me. I'm getting sick (actually it's probably the cold virus going around). I've been burning it out of my throat with tea and chipolte infused honey.

Date: 2016-02-01 03:03 am (UTC)I'm actually angry about that YA book. I can't get a minute's notice on mine and this one has SUCH unbelieveable stuff in it I can't believe it got past an agent and multiple editors, like in the first few chapters the Hyde character (it's a take off Jekyll and Hyde in modern times) breaks the star quarterback's arm in a fight and NOTHING happens. No cops. No explusion. Nothing.
Later the Hyde character comes to school after his father has beaten him so badly his face is laid open and his wrist is broken and all the teacher does is say I know what's happening, you can stay with me, here's my phone #. Doesn't call the cops. I'm like that's illegal. You HAVE to report this stuff.
This is not esoteric knowledge. Even the YAs geared to would know this.

Date: 2016-02-01 12:04 am (UTC)Okay, Florida in June or in July? Let me know. I'll make plans. Though I'm talking to Mom about going down for a long weekend to take her to Universal.

Date: 2016-02-01 12:32 am (UTC)The tampax thing was interesting. They said that they'd had medicinal uses, but I wasn't clear on why. I assume it would have been for menstrual disorders, but perhaps it would have just been for general pain relief for other things. What do you think?

Date: 2016-02-01 02:26 am (UTC)It sounds like that a lot of these could have been for endometriosis but more likely it was a way for women to relax. They weren't allowed into saloons etc back then but no one questioned the feminine hygiene. Between this and laudnum, women (at least wealthier ones) were probably ripped half the time

Date: 2016-02-01 02:11 am (UTC)Cons are fun, I'm not sure how much fun it is to be on a panel, cuz I've never done that before, but okay. If I was heading to Animazement, I'd definitely stop by & say hi! :D
I've been to Melbourne Florida in the summer & it's not that bad. & Ive been to Disney in the summer as a kid... Then again, I have a high tolerance for the heat. XD
I'd read it, but I have writing I need/want to do & then there's work... *sighs* Why is there never enough time in a day to do everything you want?
Opium soaked tampons... Interesting stuff.
I hope you feel better! *huggles*

And you've done enough for me already, thank you.
I'm like hmmmm to those tampons
