Since I won't be here we'll pretend that my chapter of Built on Lies last night was for this. I won't have time to talk about much. Sigh. I started watching to see if it would be as idiotic as the movie and to be honest at first I wasn't impressed. I liked Giles and Willow and not much else. If not for S 2 with Angelus, Spike and Dru who I adored I would never have watched at all. Lack of time back then stopped me from going to S3 and I was shocked a year later to hear there was a spinoff since Angel had died. I still didn't watch. Finally Evil Little Dog got me watching thankfully FX & TNT started rerunning them and I got to see it all while starting fresh with S5 Buffy and S2 Angel.

I liked that there was a young girl with the power instead of her being a squealing sidekick (though that empowerment was eroded in later years). I liked the banter and the real life problems that were examined. For the most part I liked the characters and the imagination shown.

And since I need to catch a plane I'll wrap it up fast.

[livejournal.com profile] tiirz bugged me to watch BtVS for ages. I'd seen the movie and thought it was a pretty good bad movie, but not so thrilling I was moved to watch the TV show. Something else we watched was on at the same time. But the summer after S3, Tiirz brought over some tapes of S2, and got us hooked. It was the writing that got me, first thing. God, I loved the dialogue, Sharp and zingy and funny, and while B/A did nothing for me, I still think the Angelus arc was one hell of a story. And back in the olden days, I loved the characters, because while they my have made mistakes and dones stupid things, you really felt that they cared--for each other, and for the world they were trying so hard to save. So we started watching BtVS4 and AtS1 at the same time. As was my usual custom, just enjoyed the show and didn't ship anyone, though I thought Riley was way better for Buffy that Angel, and Angel was far better off on his own.

Then in S5 they started doing something interesting with Spike that pushed every single "what is the nature of good and evil and free will and all that bull" button I've got, combined with what seemed to me like a really cool mortal-enemies-drawn-to-each-other-against-their-will plot. That's what got me started in internet fandom and writing fan fiction; I had to find someone I could talk to about Spike. Imagine my surprise to find the net full of people screaming about how the Spike thing was the ruination of the show and accusing anyone who shipped Spuffy of being a moral degenerate. Fancy.

Anyway, interest in Spike kept me watching through S6 and S7, long after I'd lost patience with most of the other characters (whom I feel sorry for more than anything else; they didn't deserve to end their careers in that ill-written muddle.) I'm not terribly thrilled with the way the show ended, but overall it was certainly worth watching, and if nothing else, being a Spike redemptionist means I've honed my debating skills...

While Spuffy does nothing for me (though the fandom tends to be a hell of a lot better than what the show gave us), my first fanfic was a Spike/Buffy over Joyce's grave. I agree about the interesting things they did with Spike in S5. It was the only thing of interest in that season and about the last season worth the watching IMO.

I think we pretty much agree on the earlier seasons (though I did like B/A and hell I liked Riley too. Riley bashing turned me off reading any B/A shippy story unless ELD read it first and told me it was safe)

I still think either the Angelus/Spike/Dru or the Mayor where the best villians on either show. I can't say which I liked better
