May. 11th, 2005 01:40 pmBuffyverse Day 2005!!!
Post about why you love the Buffyverse... what drew you in... what keeps you in it... Talk about your favorite episode, your favorite character, your favorite pairing, your favorite whatever. Write a story, make an icon or two, post an essay... Just show your flist why you love the Buffyverse!
Since I won't be here we'll pretend that my chapter of Built on Lies last night was for this. I won't have time to talk about much. Sigh. I started watching to see if it would be as idiotic as the movie and to be honest at first I wasn't impressed. I liked Giles and Willow and not much else. If not for S 2 with Angelus, Spike and Dru who I adored I would never have watched at all. Lack of time back then stopped me from going to S3 and I was shocked a year later to hear there was a spinoff since Angel had died. I still didn't watch. Finally Evil Little Dog got me watching thankfully FX & TNT started rerunning them and I got to see it all while starting fresh with S5 Buffy and S2 Angel.
I liked that there was a young girl with the power instead of her being a squealing sidekick (though that empowerment was eroded in later years). I liked the banter and the real life problems that were examined. For the most part I liked the characters and the imagination shown.
And since I need to catch a plane I'll wrap it up fast.

Date: 2005-05-11 10:55 pm (UTC)Then in S5 they started doing something interesting with Spike that pushed every single "what is the nature of good and evil and free will and all that bull" button I've got, combined with what seemed to me like a really cool mortal-enemies-drawn-to-each-other-against-their-will plot. That's what got me started in internet fandom and writing fan fiction; I had to find someone I could talk to about Spike. Imagine my surprise to find the net full of people screaming about how the Spike thing was the ruination of the show and accusing anyone who shipped Spuffy of being a moral degenerate. Fancy.
Anyway, interest in Spike kept me watching through S6 and S7, long after I'd lost patience with most of the other characters (whom I feel sorry for more than anything else; they didn't deserve to end their careers in that ill-written muddle.) I'm not terribly thrilled with the way the show ended, but overall it was certainly worth watching, and if nothing else, being a Spike redemptionist means I've honed my debating skills...

Date: 2005-05-14 11:04 pm (UTC)I think we pretty much agree on the earlier seasons (though I did like B/A and hell I liked Riley too. Riley bashing turned me off reading any B/A shippy story unless ELD read it first and told me it was safe)
I still think either the Angelus/Spike/Dru or the Mayor where the best villians on either show. I can't say which I liked better

Date: 2005-05-12 11:42 am (UTC)What keeps me in? The sharp dialouge, Joss has many faults especially long-term planning (great for the first 3 seasons, but afterwards...), but no one writes witty dialouge like him.
Favourite episode - tough call. Sheer comedy value - Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered. Angst - Five by Five. Fave fight scene - Faith going up against Angelus and drugging him with Orpehus.
Faith - she was so many things, hot, confident, vunerable, funny, dangerous.
Fav Pairing. F\X - Faith needs someone she can trust not to abuse her, not to look down on her (ie. not Spike or Wood), who understands her past. Xander needs someone to care for.
