Decision made...I think
Jul. 22nd, 2004 11:31 amI got the contract to go to WIsconsin. I talked it out with friends and family and I think I posted something similar to this yesterday but now I've mulled it over more. I've never taught before. Worse, I've never been shown how to teach. I had three teaching classes here at UCF, yes. One was so basic I haven't had my intelligence this insulted since elementary school (which since we were cutting out colored paper I felt like I was back in), one taught how to handle ethics and discipline which was enlightening (i.e. in public H.S. you're boned. You aren't allowed to discipline anyone in any shape or form) and one was how to do the curriculum.
Helpful yes, showing me how to teach, and lesson plan and construct tests, no. Rather than spend hundreds of dollars I don't have to interview for a job in a place I really don't want to live in to teach just enough classes to be part time so I get no bennies, I thought about it. What happens when you put someone who doesn't know how to teach, has never been in a classroom, in charge of 3-4 classes? Most people facing that trained for 4 years. I decided I'd be better off in Wisconsin with ONE class to start off with, get my feet wet. The class is canned, in other words, they're handing me the script, I perform like a trained chimp and they give me the tests to hand out. It's not a bad way to start. Less to mess up and potentially a lot to gain since I have a week of training up front and can mentor throughout the semester.
In other news, I called my medical school who has three of my loans. I need to know how much I owe. I thought, hell I paid on that loan for 4 years already. I probably owe like 3,000$ now. Yeah add a one in front of that. BUT they'll defer my payments on two of the three so now I just need 90$ a month for them. So whee. I'm still praying for a forgiveness on the med school loans.
