Aug. 8th, 2005 02:53 pmWell miracles do happen. I’m here and the trip WAS uneventful so thanks for all the good wishes. It rained a little but not so much as to be miserable. THREE boys instead of two showed up willing to split the 100$ and they’re all my neighbors. They had that truck unloaded in under 40 minutes (strong young boys). Dad got all the curtain rods up and all the beds built. Mom and I fixed up the kitchen. Thank god for massive cupboard space though I will need a step stool (unusual for me, I’m about 5’9”) because I have a lot of cupboard space at the seven-foot level.
I marked down all the previous damage to the place and the manager is gonna sign off on it like it or not. They didn’t fix the broken ceiling fan and that irritates me. The place isn’t modular (Even though it looks like it. But the place isn’t built well. The floor creaks bad. The one downside to the place, the bathroom. It’s so tiny and there’s no linen closet so I had to buy a large 4-tier shelf for the computer room to hold the toiletries. Blech. The tub is tiny but the back is angled well so it’s comfortable. However the person who put the toilet paper holder to the left and behind the toilet needs slapped.
I’m in the middle of nowhere but since I’m right off the Welsh Byway it’s all highway to the school (7) miles and to the main business street in Jackson (10 miles) it’s still a very convenient location. There are some cool and creepy buildings in Jackson’s downtown. Will need to get pictures.
The 101st reason Verizon sucks? All their 1-800’s numbers are closed on the weekends. Mom had to go online to get the Internet service number (it’s not on the bills). They are there but….I call and wait 45 minutes the first time and she transfers me to a number that says the call volume is too high and apologizes for not helping me and hangs up. I call back and this was only a 10-minute wait and he says you have no account. Yes I do here’s the tracking number. I can’t use that. Why the hell not, that’s why you give it to us! You need your user name. I’m a new account you twit I don’t have one. You have to call back tomorrow and set that up. Kill! I wouldn’t have been so upset about it if not for that first 45 min. wait and the transfer to nowhere.
So I get through after 20 minutes today. They asked ME what’s a local number to me. How the hell should I know you’re the damn phone company you tell me. So after 20 more minutes the tech answers and he asks me about the disc. What disc, you idiots never sent it. Do it manually I know you can. So then he tells me the user id that I JUST set up with billing has already been taken. I’m now furious. How in the hell didn’t billing know that? He apologies and send me back to billing to get another user id. Instead I get the response the call volume is too high and apologizes for not helping me and hangs up. I had to call back and I’m still waiting and now an hour later. Oh wait, there she is and now she’s telling me my phone # and address aren’t valid and won’t pull up. Well they’ve pulled up for everyone else, you’ve mailed me shit here and the phone’s been ringing for 2 days now. She comes back on every 5 minutes to apologize for the delay and she’s talking to the supervisor who also can’t find it. They take my tracking number and start from scratch. They don’t know if I need to call the area code to make a call locally. I don’t either since I just moved here. She insists they aren’t the phone company so they don’t know if I need to either (well call your supervisor sweet-pea, someone has to know. You ARE the phone company, just call one of your own reps). She puts me on hold and goes back to the checking in every 5 minutes to apologize for the wait. It won’t let her do the registration because my phone number isn’t valid. She can’t do it. Sorry. No Internet for you until she calls me back.
I decided to call back because other people could do it. This woman finds my account instantly. She starts registering me. She actually puts a password on the account (unlike the other twit). She doesn’t know which is the damn local access, I have to call in some numbers and find out from Verizon Phone if they’re local or not. And they can’t put this on my Verizon bill because they haven’t assigned me an account number yet (WTF? I have an active phone. How can there be no account number?) She goes to talk to the phone service for me so I don’t have to put it on the credit card. They have her on hold for over 20 minutes finally I ask can SHE ask if those numbers are local access so I don’t have another 40 minute wait once she’s done. She says yes. No one EVER picks up and after 45 minutes we give up and her supervisor okays it. I then take these damn numbers they gave me and they’re all long distance. Verizon Phone tells me that my internet service makes up its own exchanges. I said look I’ve been on the phone for four hours now and I’m NOT going to be calling back and forth to check these numbers just give me the local exchanges for all the non-toll calls. He tells me to check the phone book. I tell him where to shove his phone book since Verizon hasn’t bothered to send me one. He snottily gives me all 9 local exchanges in Jackson plus the three other local exchanges and I have to call back billing again for the damn internet service. This guy has no idea what the hell I’m talking about. He sends me to tech support. This takes over 20 minutes and they tell there is NO local numbers at all.
I call mom. She finds Earthlink has a local access number. I call Earthlink. I wait two minutes. They have that local number. In under 40 minutes not only do I have Earthlink, I have their version of Callwave which is cheaper and I’m debating on the 4$ a month Norton anti-virus (it’s probably worth it). So another 30 minutes later I’m back on with Verizon to cancel it. This girl asks why in the world didn’t they tell you there’s no local numbers from the get go. We can see that here. I tell her about the phone book man and she says report him. Way ahead of you, sister. I dial up Earthlink…and it won’t connect. Head desk. I call them up and wait around another ten minutes. Turns out they didn’t listen and put my password in in all lowercase instead of how I told them too. It’s fixed though! It took a total of 6 hours. Appreciate the effort it took to be with you guys.
I still have tons of unpacking to do. I’ve already spent 200$ at Wal-Mart just buying toiletries, cleaning supplies, and food. Good lord. Oh and two stands and I splurged on those 10$ three-packs of 5 year lights for the ceiling fan but heck the 2 pack (excuse me, where did you ever see a 2 light ceiling fan GE?) was 3.50 so for the extra 3$ I’ll have lights that don’t need replacing every other month. I still have to go back to Wal-Mart and buy stuff to fix up the futon and a towel rack (yes the crappy bathroom doesn’t even have a towel rack)
The strange squash in my garden isn’t a squash (it was yellow and misshapen last time) is actually a cute little pumpkin now. There are a few half dead flowers out there. I bought some more and some Alaskan peas that out to do well planted now. There are nearly a dozen kids living here. This should be interesting. One more of them rings my doorbell and runs I’ll be meeting my neighbors fast (that doesn’t really tick me off. What ticks me off is mom is out there watching them do this). Ah well back to unpacking.
